... to the dravite/oxydravite group, with an evolutionary trend towards magnesio-foitite, and commonly are Mg rich (up to 2.06 apfu) with low Na (<0.61 apfu) and up to 53% X-site vacancies. Characteristics are low abundances of total REE (0.25–0.67× chondrite) and a flat trend, with minor HREE enrichment...

Al-Fe-Mg ternary diagram of tourmaline coposition. The Ghagri tourmalines plot along oxydravite-povondraite join, similar to the tourmalines from evaporite basins of Bolivia and China. The plots for tourmalines from Bolivia and China are from Henry et al. (2008).

Classification diagrams for tourmaline from (A) Hutti and Uti and (B) Hira-Buddini, after Henry et al. (2003). Total Fe (Fe2+ + Fe3+) is used as the Fe value. Data for tourmalines from Hutti and Uti fall in the dravite field and extend toward magnesio-foitite, whereas Hira-Buddini tourmaline compositions plot in the dravite/oxydravite and schorl fields.

... into account the IR data, we suggest that this tourmaline can be classed as an intermediate member of the povondraite – “oxydravite” series. The second generation overgrows tourmaline-I and occurs also as isolated crystals up to a few tens of μm long ( Fig. 2A ). It is interesting that if a sulfide mineral...

... between homogeneous oxy-dravite crystals. Scalloped boundaries between oxydravite cores and dravite overgrowths may represent dissolution-reprecipitation features ( Fig. 4 ; Dutrow & Henry 2000 , Henry et al . 2003 ). The dravite is somewhat variable in major- and minor-element composition ( Table...

... at the W-site. These are best called oxydravite tourmalines in which the dominant exchange vector is AlO[R(OH)] −1 . Average excess charge values greater than zero as well as the lack of strong pleochroism suggest that little, if any, Fe 3+ is present ( Medaris et al. 2003 ). F igure 9. Graphs...

.... Numerous electron microprobe analyses, assuming the presence of boron, the absence of fluorine, and all Fe as Fe 3+ , are listed for the tourmaline of Alto Chapare. The results suggest an almost continuous solid-solution series from povondraite to ‘oxydravite’ to dravite. Also present is K-rich tourmaline...
