...P. F. Friend; W. B. Harland; D. A. Rogers; L. Snape; R. S. W. Thornley Abstract The stratigraphy of the Siktefjellet and Red Bay groups of northwestern Spitsbergen is revised in the light of new fieldwork. An early Early Devonian (Lochkovian) age is indicated by the rich fossil vertebrate faunas...

...STEVEN L. FORMAN Abstract The late Weichselian and Holocene raised-beach sequences on northwestern Spitsbergen provide a detailed record of sea-level oscillations during the last deglacial hemicycle. Initial emergence commenced at ≥13 ka, coincident with local deglaciation, and until 10.5 ka...

... rocks of northern and northwestern Spitsbergen, the sandstones of Foreland Sound are low-rank lithic graywackes and were derived from low-grade metamorphic rocks a very short distance west. They were formed in a developing graben, from erosion of a fault block rising along the system of faults now...

The older ages are similar to those obtained previously in northwestern Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet where they are related to the Tonian age Nordaustlandet Orogeny. The younger ages complement those obtained recently from elsewhere in Wedel...

...R. D. DALLMEYER; J. J. PEUCAT; Y. OHTA Abstract Contrasting metamorphic sequences are exposed within a fault-bounded horst on Biskayerhalvøya, northwestern Spitsbergen. The Biskayerfonna Group is composed of variably pelitic metasedimentary rocks together with interlayered amphibolite. Amphibole...

Composition of hypothetic C–O–H fluid vs. oxygen fugacity under PT-conditions corresponding to the model geotherm with a surface heat flow of 55 mW/m2 (solid lines). The content of H2O is given for spinel peridotites from northwestern Spitsbergen at particular P, T, and fO2 parameters (equilibrium (1) and nonequilibrium (2) hypothetic fluid) in comparison with the portion of structural water in the xenoliths (FTIR spectroscopy data) (3). Other designations follow Fig. 10.

Geological map of northwestern Ny-Friesland, Spitsbergen, Svalbard (simplified after Elvevold and Dallmann 2011). MT, Mosselhalvøya Thrust; ESZ, Eossuletta Shear Zone. The location of the map is marked by the red polygon on schematic simplified geological map of the Svalbard Archipelago (bottom right corner; modified from Gee and Teben’kov 2004). BF, Billefjorden Fault Zone; WSFTB, West Spitsbergen Fold and Thrust Belt. The locations of studied samples: KK13-2, JB15-38, and JB15-36 are marked by white boxes and blue arrows. The WGS84 map projection has been used.

Pversus Tdiagram showing the conditions in the northern Cordilleran mantle. The 50 mW/m2 geotherm corresponds to a conductive geotherm typical of Phanerozoic areas (Poudjom-Djomani et al. 2001). The incipient melting regime for amphibole-bearing veins corresponds to the P–Tspace between the water-saturated solidus for mantle amphibole (St Paul’s mylonite from Millhollen and Wyllie 1974) and the amphibole-out curve for olivine nephelinite (Allen et al. 1975). The incipient melting regime for hydrous peridotite corresponds to the P–Tspace between the amphibole-out curve and dry solidi for Hawaiian pyrolite (HPY) (Green 1973). The paleogeotherm field for orogenic belts includes geotherms derived from xenoliths from southeastern Australia (O’Reilly and Griffin 1985), eastern China (Xu et al. 1996), and northwestern Spitsbergen (Amundsen et al. 1987). The Cordilleran conductive geotherm corresponds to the steady-state model used by Hyndman and Lewis (1999). The transition from the spinel to garnet lherzolite (Sp lherz – Gt lherz) is taken from O’Neill (1981). The cross corresponds to the experimentally determined P–Tconditions for amphibole in a NEPH sample (HF-13) from Hirschfeld (Dalpé 1997). The bold arrow indicates the proposed shift in the continental geotherm associated with lithospheric thinning, and the ellipse indicates the possible P–Tconditions of the melting responsible for the Cordilleran alkaline magmas.
