...Athos CALLEGARI; Fiorenzo MAZZI; Carla TADINI Abstract The crystal structures of the two polytypes of the compound CaMgB 2 O 5 , kurchatovite and clinokurchatovite, were determined in the space groups Pc2 1 b and P2 1 /c respectively by Yakubovich et al. (1976) and Simonov et al. (1980...

Projection along [010] of the unit cell of clinokurchatovite and of half (a/2) cell of kurchatovite. The two structures coincide until xmon = 0.75 and xorth = 0.25, where the b-glide plane takes place in the orthorhombic cell. The empty B-triangles refer to the range (0.75 <xmon < 1) of the cell of clinokurchatovite, whereas all the remaining B-triangles belong to kurchatovite. For sake of clarity the sites of Ca and Mg have been omitted. The projection is 3° rotated along a* to reduce the overlapping of B-triangles.

The crystal structure of the monoclinic module which composes the structures of kurchatovite and clinokurchatovite. The two projections: (a) along [001] and (b) along [010] show the sites of calcium and magnesium as well as the two triangles with a common vertex of the borate cluster. The possible symmetries at the two (100) border planes of the module are given in the (a) projection. The (b) projection is 3° rotated along a* to reduce the overlapping of B-tri-angles.

It does not appear that a similar fate will befall kurchatovite and clinokurchatovite, although Belokoneva (2003) concluded that these minerals are polytypes...
