... are chattermark trails. Chattermark trails are a series of linearly arranged, rune-like grooves on surfaces of minerals grains, such as quartz and garnet, lacking any type of cleavage. These trails have been described from many unconsolidated sediments and are attributed mostly to glacial sediments. Laboratory...

...Elizabeth Decker Orr; Robert L. Folk Abstract The occurrence of chattermark trails varies with weathering on glacial garnet sand grains but not on quartz grains. More garnet grains in contact with humic acids near a soil zone are chattermarked and more chattermark trails occur per grain. Artificial...

...C. P. GRAVENOR Abstract An examination of the surface textures on detrital garnets shows that conchoidal fractures, V-shaped etch pits, and other marks of unknown origin can be modified by chemical etching to produce features which resemble chattermark trails produced by slip-stick motion. In order...

... and rutile. The garnets are angular, fresh in appearance, and about 9% of the garnets have glacially derived chattermark trails. This observation, along with the presence of striated and facetted clasts, suggest that at some time prior to final deposition, the diamictites underwent transport in glaciers...

SEM image of detrital quartz grain from beach sediment (Vår Haller, Sweden, grain size = 520 μm). This quartz grain was also etched with dilute hydrofluoric acid (10%) for 25 minutes. It shows a high abundance of interfering chattermark trails (encircled with white).

SEM image of detrital quartz grain from cave sediments (Bismarck cave in Franconia, Bavaria, Germany). The cave sediments are redeposited Cretaceous sands. The dimension of this detrital quartz grain is 155 μm x 100 μm. It shows a conchoidal broken surface with chattermark trails (encircled with white).

Post-etching SEM image of a bead surface. Note the linear series of chattermark trails (one example is encircled with white) in addition to the scratches (same area as in Fig. 2). Some series are crossed by scratches as in Figure 2. The linear scratch is slightly wider compared to the unetched scratch in Figure 2. Alongside the scratch are some dust particles on top of the surface (surface is lit from the upper left).
