ABSTRACT Onshore Eel River Basin, in coastal Northern California, is comprised of Tertiary, predominantly marine, clastic sediments which may exceed 16,000 feet in thickness. Structurally, the present day basin is a west plunging synclinorium with upturned and exposed strata on the south limb and thrust faulting along the northeast margin. Hydrocarbon exploration, ongoing since the turn of the century, has resulted in the discovery of Tompkins Hill gas field which has produced nearly 90 Bcf of high BTU gas from Pliocene sands. Two subcommercial field discoveries have been abandoned. Recent published work suggests that the Yager Complex contains strata which may qualify as suitable exploration objectives. Bear River strata contains sands which have stratigraphic trapping potential along the flanks of the basin. Strata within the overlying Wildcat Group, in particular the Pullen and Rio Dell sands offer stratigraphic trapping potential in concert with known structural highs. Structural closure may exist beneath regional east-dipping thrust sheets. Potentially closed structures are present along the Little Salmon-Yager fault trend and in the basin Interior Even in the case where structural closure is adequately defined, viable prospects must still demonstrate the presence of suitable objective reservoir. Rigorous geologic surface mapping and application of new geophysical technology will be essential to the successful exploration program.
