Abstract We report here a growth model for phreatomagmatic maar-diatreme volcanoes with respect to the number of eruptions documented in the tephra beds of maar tephra rings and the upper bedded diatreme facies. We show that the number of tephra beds in large diatremes is larger than that in maar tephra rings. Base surges that lack sufficient momentum to scale high maar crater walls deposit their tephra only inside the crater. Thus the total number of eruptions at large maar-diatreme volcanoes will be larger than the number recorded in maar tephra rings. As many maar-diatreme volcanoes erupt dominantly accidental clasts, an incremental mathematical model was applied to study the growth of diatremes. The model is based only on the ejection of distinct amounts of accidental clasts per unit eruption and the chosen number of eruptions is assumed to be identical. The incremental growth of cone-shaped diatremes follows cube-root functions with respect to diameter and depth and slows down with ongoing eruptions. In nature, small and large maar-diatreme volcanoes are formed and filled syn-eruptively, mostly by tephra, depending on the duration and quantity of magma involved in phreatomagmatic eruptions. In our opinion, this mathematical model is the only current method able to model the growth of diatremes.

Lower Paleozoic configuration of the Quebec reentrant based on improved along-strike paleogeography
Abstract Mineral deposits are heterogeneously distributed in both space and time, with variations reflecting tectonic setting, evolving environmental conditions, as in the atmosphere and hydrosphere, and secular changes in the Earth’s thermal history. The distribution of deposit types whose settings are tied to plate margin processes (e.g. orogenic gold, volcanic-hosted massive sulphide, Mississippi valley type Pb–Zn deposits) correlates well with the supercontinent cycle, whereas deposits related to intra-cratonic settings and mantle-driven igneous events, such as Ni–Cu–PGE deposits, lack a clear association. The episodic distribution of deposits tied to the supercontinent cycle is accentuated by selective preservation and biasing of rock units and events during supercontinent assembly, a process that encases the deposit within the assembled supercontinent and isolates it from subsequent removal and recycling at plate margins.
Umbers, ocean crust and the Irish Caledonides: terrane transpression and the morphology of the Laurentian margin
Cambrian–Silurian development of the Laurentian margin of the Iapetus Ocean in Greenland and related areas
The Iapetus margin of Laurentia is preserved, with varying degrees of deformation, along a belt that extends for 1300 km along the eastern coast of Greenland, from Scoresby Sund in the south to Kronprins Christian Land at the northernmost extent of the Caledonian–Appalachian orogen. Along the length of the Greenland Caledonides, deformation is restricted to a single orogenic phase, the Scandian, at around 425 Ma, which represents the continent-continent collision of Laurentia and Baltica. The Lower Paleozoic stratigraphy can be closely correlated with the palinspastically contiguous terranes of NE Spitsbergen, Bjørnøya, and NW Scotland, and, farther to the south, that of western Newfoundland. In Greenland itself, Lower Paleozoic sediments are present in the foreland, parautochthon, and the highest allochthonous sheet of the orogen, the Franz Joseph allochthon. In the Franklinian Basin of eastern North Greenland, unconformity-bounded Lower Cambrian sediments can be correlated with the Sauk I sequence of cratonic North America. These Cambrian sediments are separated from younger units by a significant hiatus, the sub–Wandel Valley unconformity, but above that surface, the succession extends without major breaks from the major flooding event at the base of Sauk IV (Early Ordovician) through to the early Wenlock. The carbonate platform in this region foundered from late Llandovery time onward due to loading by thrust sheets, and turbidite deposition replaced platform carbonate deposition. Caledonian thrusts truncate the youngest preserved sediments, which are of early Wenlock age. The punctuated, attenuated stratigraphy seen in Kronprins Christian Land continues southward along the length of the parautochthon, through Lambert Land, Nørreland, and Dronning Louise Land, to a series of tectonic windows in the southern part of the Greenland Caledonides. In contrast to the stratigraphy seen in the parautochthon, the Franz Joseph allochthon contains one of the thickest Cambrian–Middle Ordovician successions in Laurentia, including a complete succession from Sauk I to Tippecanoe II.
