Annual gas and oil production in the Stratton field. Note that both the 1997 and 2010 Alice earthquakes occurred well after the highest production levels were reached in the 1965–1975 period. Data are from Levey, Finley and Sippel (1994) updated with information from the Texas Railroad Commission.

West–east reflection seismic line from a 3D dataset over Stratton Field (Levey, Finley, and Sippel, 1994; Levey, Hardage, et al., 1994), showing generalized structure and stratigraphy. The seismic line is approximately 3 km long and is situated about 3 km south of the preferred epicenters of the 1997 and 2010 earthquakes. The vertical axis indicates two‐way travel time in ms. The principal stratigraphic horizons are interpreted and labeled on the figure: the gently deformed middle (∼1350  ms) and lower (∼1550 and 1650 ms) Frio formation overlies the growth‐faulted lower Frio and Vicksburg formation section, above the master Vicksburg expansion fault (1800–2300 ms). The Vickburg fault is a regional north‐northeast‐striking buried growth‐fault zone, subparallel to the present coastline and extending at least 100 miles northeast from the Mexico–U. S. border. Most of the gas production in the Stratton field is from middle Frio sandstone reservoirs at depths of 1.5–2.0 km. The color version of this figure is available only in the electronic edition.

Structural model based on seismic and geologic observations showing the effects of the major and subsidiary growth faults on the deeper middle Frio succession in the Stratton and Agua Dulce fields. The faults displace the horizons into several compartments. Deformation is more pronounced in the hanging-wall sides of the growth faults. Deformation is common in the AD fault footwall in northern Stratton Field and southern Agua Dulce Field.

Spectral pseudovolume formulation of real seismic data. (a) Horizon pseudovolume formulated from a time slice extracted beneath a gas reservoir from offshore Netherlands. The anomalously bright spectral amplitudes that gradually fade away from low frequencies are indicative of a low-frequency shadow. Data provided by dGB Earth Science. (d) Front view of a cross-sectional pseudovolume. Both images are cross sections of the channel in the Stratton field example shown in Figure 5b, extracted along crossline 90. (a) Inline #93 from the Stratton data set, with no additional processing; the crosslines, time lines, and stratigraphic setting are labeled. The anomaly of interest is indicated by the gray arrow; the blue peak provided the seed for tracking the horizon shown in Figure 3. The color scale is shown at the bottom; extreme values are shown in bright colors, where blue indicates an increase in impedance for American polarity or a decrease in impedance for European polarity. (b) Type log from the Union Producing Company 7A well showing the lithologic variations at the Stratton field, with spontaneous potential (SP) and deep resistivity (ResD) log curves (modified from the Figure 2 in El-Mowafy and Marfurt, 2016); the amplitude anomaly of interest is located in the lower Frio or the uppermost Vicksburg (approximately 7000 ft).

Index map showing the location of the contiguous Stratton and Agua Dulce fields and locations of the two three-dimensional (3-D) seismic surveys used in this study. The two fields are represented schematically by one polygon (not to scale), which approximates the structure closure at the middle Frio stratigraphic level. The two fields occur next to each other, and they are defined by parallel-to-the fault northeast–southwest-trending large rollover anticline that is related to the Vicksburg and Agua Dulce faults’ hanging wall deformation. Stratton field extends from northern Kleberg County into southern Nueces County, and Agua Dulce field extends farther to the northeast and is mostly covered by the Union Pacific Resources (UPR) 3-D seismic survey. Polygon A delineates the interpreted area of the UPR 3-D seismic survey. Polygon B delineates area with well control inside the UPR 3-D seismic survey. Polygon C defines area covered by the smaller University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology (UT-BEG) 3-D seismic survey. The FR-4 gas play is the prolific Frio gas trend in south Texas with production from Frio and Vicksburg fluvial and deltaic sandstone reservoirs, respectively, along the Vicksburg fault zone. Stratton and Agua Dulce fields are located in this play (modified from Kosters et al., 1989). Location of Union Pacific Resources Company (UPRC) 175 Wardner well with vertical seismic profile (VSP) is shown on the map. Line of the stratigraphic section in Figure 4 connecting the UPRC 182 and 185 Wardner GP wells is shown. Corpus Christi bay is also marked on this map. Regional well-log structural cross-section showing good example of a rollover anticline developed on the hanging wall of the major Agua Dulce fault in the Stratton Field area. The stacking patterns of the BMF fluvial sandstone reservoirs range from dispersed architecture (multiple vertically stacked sand bodies that have limited lateral continuity and separated vertically by thick layers of floodplain mudstones) close to the major growth fault to concentrated architecture (multiple laterally stacked sand bodies that have more lateral continuity and separated vertically by thin layers of floodplain mudstones) along the crest of the rollover anticline. Location of the cross-section is indicated in Figure 9.
