Strasburg Junction locality map and stratigraphic setting: (1) stratigraphic column through the Edinburg Formation at Strasburg Junction; arrows denote sample horizons of silicified material; ms = mudstone, ws = wackstone, ps = packstone, gs = grainstone; (2) simplified stratigraphic chart, showing Mohawkian (Sandbian) units of northern Virginia, in relation to the depositional sequences of Holland and Patzkowsky (1996), data from Mitchell et al. (2004, fig. 7); (3) road and locality map for Strasburg Junction. Dotted lines are railroad tracks, thin lines are roads, and the thick line is the Shenandoah River. Star denotes location of section in Fig. 1.1. Latitude 38°59′48.03″N, Longitude 78°22′40.58″W.

The very positive report on Bill Evitt’s PhD thesis (Trilobites from the Lower Lincolnshire Limestone near Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia) by his principal supervisor, Franco Rasetti of Johns Hopkins University, Maryland. The oral examination upon which the report is based took place in mid-January 1950, with Rasetti as chair. The image is reproduced with the approval of the Evitt family.

A line drawing of the silicified Middle Ordovician trilobite Ceratocephala laciniata from the Middle Ordovician Botetourt Member (Edinburg Formation) of Strasburg Junction, Shenandoah County, Virginia. This is a reconstruction in oblique exterior view of this fast-moving, low-level epifaunal carnivorous trilobite species. The reconstriction assumes that the thorax comprises 10 segments, that the openings in the spines and tubercles on the outer surface of the exoskeleton were occupied by sensory hairs and that typical trilobite antennules were present. The image has been modified from the frontispiece of Whittington & Evitt (1954, fig. 1). The scale bar represents 5 mm.
