...GRZEGORZ SADLOK Abstract The continental Lower Permian Słupiec Formation (the Sudetes Mountains, southwestern Poland) is well known for the occurrence of fossilized tracks of Early Permian tetrapods. Previous reports have focused on the taxonomy of tracks and their producers. The track assemblage...

The Słupiec Formation: location, stratigraphy and sedimentary structures. A) Geological map of the Słupiec Formation: sediments and volcanic rocks (based on Kurowski 2004; Awdankiewicz et al. 2003); the main cities and towns are shown (including sampling area in Tłumaczów). B) Contact between volcanic and sedimentary rocks (the road to the “Old Quarry”, Tłumaczów). C) General view (toward east) of the “Gardzień Quarry” (Tłumaczów)—two levels with sedimentary sections are shown. The geological section at the lower level was inaccessible for sampling due to safety reasons. The sampling was done at the upper level of the “Gardzień Quarry”. D) Schematic sedimentary columns of heterolithic sections sampled in this study and a depositional model of the Słupiec Formation (according to work of Kurowski 2004). E) Contact between volcanic rocks and sediments (lower level of the “Gardzień Quarry”; see C). F) Section accessible at the upper level of the “Gardzień Quarry”. G–I) Examples of sedimentary structures from the Słupiec Formation, including ripple marks (see bed-view in G and cross section view in J) and desiccation crack cutting the ripples (G), wrinkle marks (H), current-induced tool marks (I) and invertebrate trace fossil, like Rusophycus (see the inset in I).

Examples of tetrapod tracks from the Słupiec Formation. A) A centimeter-scale track and potential undertrack (only outline of digits is visible) are preserved on the sediment top (sandstone with ripples; WNoZ/S/6/21). B) Possibly centimeter-scale undertrack on the lower surface of a sandstone bed (WNoZ/S/6/20). C) Tiny tetrapod tracks on a lower surface of a mud lamina (WNoZ/S/6/24). Note that there are no chevrons on this surface and multiple potential tracks are present (compare with D). D) Millimeter-scale track on mudstone with chevron marks (WNoZ/S/6/22). Note this is the same specimen as the one illustrated in Fig. 4B where chevrons are discussed. There is no trackway on this surface—optimal conditions for track recording were patchy (compare with Fig. 3G and view C on this figure). E) Schematic summary showing how the ability to produce undertracks depends on (1) size of the trackmaker (its body mass; see Lockley 1991) and (2) the mode laminae are modified (penetrator-to-particle size interplay).

Location of study area and overview of geology. A) Simplified geological map of Słupiec Formation within the study area (around the Tłumaczów); the star shows the position of the area within Poland (country in outline; based on Awdankiewicz et al. 2003; Kurowski 2004). B) The contact between volcanic and sedimentary rocks as visible within the outcrop; the upper part of the Building Sandstone Member within the Słupiec Formation (lithostratigraphy based on Kurowski 2004). C) The heterolithic sediments (interbedded sandstone and mudstone) that delivered the fossil tracks illustrated in the present work. The profile and a schematic geological column are illustrated at right.
