Tomographic image of the lithospheric mantle derived from seismic P-wave data at a depth of 150 km (e.g., James et al. 2001; Fouch et al. 2004). The Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratonic blocks and the Limpopo mobile belt (K,L, and Z of inset) collectively comprise the Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe craton. Bold green line indicates the outermost boundary of the Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe craton as defined by the break between Archean and Proterozoic Re-Os ages for peridotite xenoliths (Carlson et al. 1996; Carlson et al. 1999; Janney et al. 2010). Colored squares are diamond mines: red = predominantly eclogitic silicate inclusions (Letlhakane, LE; other abbreviations in caption to Fig. 17) and green squares = predominantly peridotitic silicate inclusions (Roberts Victor, R; other abbreviations in caption to Fig. 17). Seismic P-wave tomographic image of lithospheric mantle beneath the Kaapvaal (K) and Zimbabwe (Z) cratons and intervening Limpopo (L) belt (after James et al., 2001; Shirey et al., 2002; Fouch et al., 2004). The north-northwest–trending region of seismically slow mantle at 150 km depth within the diamond stability field matches the surface expression of 2.05 Ga old Bushveld-Molopo magmatism. The similarity in the pattern of silicate inclusion paragenesis, seismic velocity, and Bushveld magmatism rule out the velocity differences as due to the current thermal state of the lithosphere. Consequently, they must be due to compositional effects (Shirey et al., 2002; Fouch et al., 2004). Bold green line indicates the outermost boundary of the Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe cratons as defined by the break between Archean and Proterozoic Re-Os ages on peridotite xenoliths (Carlson et al., 2005). Colored squares represent diamond mines as follows: red = predominantly eclogitic diamonds (Jagersfontein = JA, Jwaneng = JW, Letlhakane = LE, Orapa = O, Premier = P), green = predominantly peridotitic diamonds (Kimberley area mines Bultfontein, De Beers, Dutoitspan, Wesselton termed De Beers Pool = D, Finsch = F, Koffiefontein = KO, Roberts Victor = R, Venetia = V).

Tomographic image of the lithospheric mantle derived from seismic P-wave data at a depth of 150 km (James et al., 2001; James and Fouch, 2002). The color scheme depicts % deviation from an average cratonic lithosphere velocity model. Areal coverage spans the lithospheric mantle of the Kaapvaal (K) and Zimbabwe (Z) cratons and the Limpopo mobile belt (L; see inset, left). Bold green line indicates the outermost boundary of the Archean cratons as defined by a sharp break between Archean and Proterozoic Re-Os ages on peridotite xenoliths (Carlson et al., 1999; Janney et al., 1999; Irvine et al., 2001). The location of diamond mines are shown by colored squares. Red squares are localities whose silicate inclusion in diamond suites are predominately eclogitic (Jagersfontein=JA, Jwaneng=JW, Letlhakane=LE, Orapa=O, Premier =P) and green squares are localities whose silicate inclusion suites are predominately peridotitic (Kimberley area mines of Bultfontein, De Beers, Dutoitspan, and Wesselton termed De Beers Pool=D, Finsch=F, Koffiefontein=KO, Roberts Victor =R, and Venetia=V). Mines located above red-yellowish areas referred to in text as having diamonds derived from seismically slower mantle; mines located above greenish-blue areas referred to in text as having diamonds derived from seismically faster mantle.
