Tracks and undertracks of Pleurodeles walti in laminated sand and in clay with a patchy biofilm. A–D) Pleurodeles walti modification of laminated medium-grained sand. Note that A–D show different tracks and that only the surficial lamina is modified in all instances. The subsurface laminae are unaltered. The top laminae are modified through interaction with individual particles (lamina piercing). E) The same substrate as in A–D, but in this case modified with a hand-held tool penetrator (10 mm diameter; see Test 1). View E shows that with sufficient force exerted on the substrate, all the laminae could have been modified. F) A fragment of surface shown in G, here a section through digital imprint is visible along with thin biofilm (dark thin lamina). G) Tracks on clay with patches of biofilm—darker areas (arrowed). Note that two successive tracks left by the same appendage of the same producer but on a different substrate (pure clay vs. clay with biofilm) display different morphologies (see the inset). The pure clay track is well defined and has tiny sediment displacement rims. The track left on a patch of biofilm is less well defined, whereas the displacement rims are either missing or are wider than those in pure-clay track. One digital impression is missing in the track on the biofilm and only the wrinkled biofilm shows the digital position (w). The superimposed outlines of the pure-clay track (darker outline) and of track on the biofilm (lighter outline) show that the latter is larger in terms of the area it occupies.
