... the northeastern margin of Japan is greatly affected by two warm currents (Kuroshio and Tsugaru currents), a cold current (Oyashio Current) and several deep-water masses. The mixture of nutrient-poor warm currents with nutrient-rich cold water has resulted in the presence of high-productivity water masses...

Location of core BOW-8A (star) in Bowers Ridge, southern Bering Sea. Sites of TPS47, RNDB06, and ES are also shown in (see text). Black arrows show main surface currents in subarctic North Pacific (EKC—East Kamchatka Current, OC—Oyashio Current). WSAW—Western Subarctic Water. Dotted line indicates path of Dense Shelf Water (DSW) and/or Okhotsk Intermediate Water (OSIW). Average Nd and Sr isotopes of Aleutian Arc and Kamchatka rocks are from GEOROC (2003). Nd and Sr isotopes of surface sediments (silicate fraction) in Bering continental shelf are from Y. Asahara's unpublished data.

Ice sediments in the Arctic Ocean. 1 – perennial marine ice (pack ice); 2 – one-year ice and fast ice; 3 – front of the discharge of sedimentary material in the Northern Atlantics; it depends on a heat factor (the 0– + 2 °C isotherm of the surficial waters); 4 – front of ice discharge in the Pacific – the boundary of the cold Oyashio Current. The discharge of one-year ice follows the displacement of a thawing zone (from south to north) – carpet discharge of sedimentary material. Unlike other zones, the ice sedimentary basins are restricted by thermal conditions.
