Abstract Geothermal exploration in Chile started in 1968 as a result of a project subscribed by the Chilean Government and the United Nations Development Program. This project is being administrated by the Corporación de Fomento de la Producción together with the United Nations (CORFO/UNDP). The purpose of this project is to determine the geothermal possibilities of an area of 108,000 km 2 in the high Andes of Tarapacá and Antofagasta provinces approximately between 18° and 25°S lat. and east of 69°30'W long. The first stage of geothermal investigations has been restricted to the northernmost part of the country mainly because this region possesses no other energy resources. Limited hydroelectric resources have already been totally developed, and oil exploration has not been successful. Although there was some previous geothermal exploration in the area, this paper is based on the writer's experience from 1968 to 1973 while in charge of the project's research in Tarapacá and Antofagasta provinces. Many of the results presented were obtained by a team of geologists working in this project, in which J. Healy, of the New Zealand Geological Survey, had a very important part.

Abstract The power needs of the Philippines are increasing at the unprecedented rate of about 8.4% per year. Indications are that this rate will increase even further owing to the following growth factors: (1) improved conditions of peace and order; (2) improvement in the national economy brought about by changes in the tax and tariff structure, increased internal-revenue and custom-duty collections, and introduction of banking and financial reforms; and (3) increased foreign investments resulting from liberalized regulations, particularly on the granting of incentives and guarantees on repatriation of investments and remittances of profits and dividends of foreign investors. As a consequence of the global energy crisis, the economic planning body of the country was forced to make a drastic change in its power-development program. Planning previously was centered on thermal plants providing base-load requirements, especially in the provincial service areas. Now the main thrust is toward hydroelectric and geothermal resources, combined with nuclear-power development. Essentially, the present power-development program of the Philippines, as recently enunciated by the President upon recommendation of the Power Development Council, is aimed at attaining self-sufficiency by minimizing dependence on oil. One step in the proposed program (Ravanzo, 1974) is to intensify investigations of geothermal fields all over the country and speed up the construction of geothermal power plants. Fortunately, the Philippines appears to have abundant geothermal potential.

Abstract As the world transitions to a green economy and society weans itself off fossil fuel dependency, the potential exists for significant economic and societal hardships to arise in regions locally reliant on the extraction and use of fossil fuels. Across Europe the oil, coal and peat producing regions will see significant job losses as mines and extractive facilities close, along with the relocation of energy infrastructure to more renewable-rich areas. The European Commission has recognized these potential issues and committed to ensuring that the green transition will be a ‘Just Transition’ towards climate neutrality. Within Ireland, the Geological Survey has been examining the potential for geogenic natural resources to assist in providing a Just Transition for workers across the most strongly affected region. The exploration and extraction of raw materials and realization of geothermal potential are among the natural resources that can offset major unemployment and contribute to a Just Transition in the affected areas.

Abstract The China Geological Survey (CGS) is affiliated to the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People's Republic of China, and is responsible for the unified deployment, organization and implementation of basic, public and strategic geological surveying and mineral exploration, providing basic geological data and information for economic and social development, and responding to public demands. Over the past 20 years, the CGS has been focusing on the national key development strategies and undertaking geological surveys to support the nation's resources and energy security, regional economic development, disaster prevention and mitigation, poverty alleviation, and other related undertakings. Specifically, the CGS has been playing a role in the following areas: assessment of mineral resources, energy resources, urban geology and geo-environment, as well as offering update and application of geodata for public and several other services.
