A similar analysis for two events with the largest number of reports are presented separately in the Figure S1 (the June 2010 M  5 Val‐Des‐Bois and the October 2012 M  4.5 Montreal earthquakes). For these events, the mean values clearly decrease with distance, and the decrease...

Location of the May 2013 Ladysmith earthquake (bull’s eye with year 2013). In addition to the topography and the main physiographic features, the map also shows the earthquakes of magnitude larger than 3.0 (Nuttli magnitude) recorded between 1980 and 2012 in southern Quebec and eastern Ontario. The years of the M5+ earthquakes are shown. The major faults of the Ottawa–Bonnecheregraben (OBG) and St. Lawrence rift system are shown as black lines. The boundaries of the western Quebec seismic zone (WQSZ) are those defined by Basham et al. (1982). (GMHST, Great Meteor Hotspot Track (assumed); TOR, Toronto; OTT, Ottawa; MTL, Montréal; TR, Trois‐Rivières; T, Temiscaming; OR, Ottawa River; LT, Lake Temiscaming.) The box shows the location of Figure 4.

(a) Intensity determined from reports submitted online via a “Did You Feel It?” page for the 10 October earthquake. The GSC received 10,323 reports, and more than 2000 additional reports, primarily from New York and Vermont and indicating intensities in the MMI II–IV range, were submitted to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/events/us/b000d3l5/us/index.html; last accessed May 2014). (b) Gridded, average intensity (modified Mercalli intensity) data at 1 km intervals for the 10 October 2012 earthquake derived from the raw data in (a). Note that the number of responses from which each average is determined is highly variable, ranging from one in the more distant, rural areas to 50 for some points within the city of Montreal.
