... Abstract Located 160 km NE of the Shetland Islands in the East Shetland Basin, the Dunlin Cluster comprises four produced fields, Dunlin, Dunlin SW, Osprey and Merlin, in addition to some near-field satellite discoveries, Skye and Block 6. Dunlin was discovered in July 1973 and production...

Plot showing Mo (%) versus Re (g/t) from 1- and 2-m drill core assays from the Merlin deposit (n = 1,206; R2 calculated by Y = 15.084x10374) conducted by Chinova Resources, the mineral resource estimate for Merlin (see text for references), and the porphyry Cu-Mo–type deposits resources field for Mo and Re (see text for references). Porphyry Mo deposits are not represented here due to their lack of economic Re but can go up to 0.25% Mo (Sinclair, 2007).

Discriminant plot based on trace element ratios that have strong source-diagnostic characteristics. Field plotted from the kimberlite/lamproitic database KIMDAT [12] to cover > 90% of the data points for each chemically distinct kimberlite/lamproite group. The least altered Merlin kimberlites (contamination indices < 1.7) are most closely allied to the Aries kimberlite. A probable alteration-only trend (alt?) toward higher P2O5/Ce, and a crustal contamination plus alteration trend (cont?) toward higher P2O5/Ce plus lower Nb/Zr are indicated by arrows.

Location map of present-day sedimentary basins containing the Triassic Sherwood Sandstone Group (SSG) across offshore and onshore Ireland and southern Great Britain with a topographic base map from GeoMapApp (2023). The estimated limits of the preserved SSG are indicated by yellow lines and the onshore outcrops are shown in yellow fill (based on Evans 1990; Ziegler 1990; Hamblin et al. 1992; Fyfe et al. 1993; Jackson et al. 1995; Dunford et al. 2001; Holloway et al. 2006; Ambrose et al. 2014; Merlin Energy Resources Consortium 2020). The oil and gas fields hosted within Triassic sandstone reservoirs and other notable Triassic geoenergy sites are also displayed (see text for further discussion).
