... for ca. 50 years regarding its origin. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain its formation, ranging from the impact of a mantle plume to the development of a plate boundary between the Somalia and Lwandle plates. Determining the timing of the volcanic activity is crucial to understanding...

... and to suggest a new tectonic plate geometry for the region. In addition, we tested geologic data from the Southwest Indian Ridge and new GPS data on Madagascar to determine refined kinematics of the Lwandle microplate. A zone of broad deformation was discovered, extending from the eastern boundary of the Rovuma...

Major fault systems of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Main Ethiopian Rift (MER), Eastern Rift, Western Rift, Southwestern (SW) Rift, Southeastern Rift, and Comoros-Madagascar Rift zones with respect to the Nubia, Somalia, Arabia and Rovuma (RMP), Victoria (Tz craton), and Lwandle (LWP) micro-plates. The green lines indicate Permian–Mesozoic normal fault systems associated with Gondwana breakup, as well as the poorly understood Paleogene rifting period (dashed if reactivated in the Late Cenozoic). Mesozoic rift zones in Kenya (Anza), coastal Tanzania (Pangani), and southwestern Tanzania (Rukwa-Malawi) also show evidence for renewed faulting and exhumation at 60–45 Ma. The brown ellipse outlines an area of ~7-Ma magmatism and platform formation in the Indian Ocean between Africa and Madagascar. Nm indicates the Nyamuragira Volcano, and Ng indicates the Nyiragongo Volcano in the Virunga volcanic chain. Boxes enclose the areas of Figures 2, 3, and 5.

Despite being rather regular, this age progression with distance (at least 5 cm/year) is too fast to be reconciled with the motion of either the Somalia plate (0.42 cm/year) or the Lwandle plate (0.17 cm/yr) over the mantle ( Stamps et...

It was recently interpreted as a limit between Rovuma and Somalia/Lwandle plates (e.g. Saria et al. 2014 ; Famin et al. 2020 ). Further, strike-slip faults with normal components...
