In the eastern part of Junggar basin, the thrust faulted Kelameili mountains are composed of Devonian and Carboniferous volcanic rocks plus derivativevolcaniclastic sedimentary rocks (Carroll et al., 1990).To the southwest, Permian and Mesozoic strata are exposed, forming...

Probably the only suture sensu stricto in the Junggar area is cryptic, and lies under the Junggar Basin’s thick Mesozoic-Cenozoic cover...

—Thickness of Upper Permian sediments and distribution of oil shales in the Junggar basin (modified from Zhao, 1982; Chen et al., 1985; Graham et al., 1990; and unpublished data). The modern outlines of the Junggar basin correspond approximately to the depicted contact between Upper Permian and sub-Upper Permian rocks. The map is based on outcrop data and on sparse well control in the western, northern, and eastern margins of the basin. Thicknesses and facies in the central portions of the basin are based largely on reflection seismic data; very few wells have penetrated the Permian in these areas. No Permian well penetrations have been reported in the southwestern portion of the basin due to extremely thick Mesozoic-Cenozoic cover (up to 13 km). Oil field data are taken from Ulmishek (1984), Lee (1985), Qin (1986), Li and Jiang (1987), Taner et al. (1988), and Peng and Zhang (1989). MMBO = million barrels of oil, BBO = billion barrels of oil, BCFG = billion cubic feet of gas, U = Urumqi, T = Tianchi, M = Manas, J = Jimsar, K = Kelameili.
