...John K. Park; James D. Aitken Abstract Paleomagnetic poles from the Upper Proterozoic Mackenzie Mountains supergroup (MMs) of northwestern Canada define an apparent polar wander path lying to the west of the Grenville Loop. This path is suggested from an analysis of the quartzitic Katherine Group...

... to the dominantly clastic Late Proterozoic Tsezotene Formation and Katherine Group of the Mackenzie Mountains Supergroup. Tests of Carey's orocline hypothesis for the arc using linear regression and a plan-view application of the fold test suggest, in line with earlier structural studies, that the arc is largely...

Probability density diagrams and histograms for detrital zircon samples from Tsezotene Formation and Katherine Group sandstones of the Mackenzie basin. Age ranges of potential source regions are highlighted with colored bars. 207Pb/206Pb ages are plotted on x-axis only for analyses that were within 10% of concordance. Replicates are not included.

Bedding-plane view of conglomerate at base of Nainlin Formation in measured section 12MWBs03; see Appendix 1 for descriptive details and location. Note angular to subrounded clasts of sandstone, probably derived locally from underlying Katherine Group, in a quartz sand matrix. Markings on hammer handle are 10 cm apart.

Stratigraphic chart for Lower and Middle Cambrian formations in the northern Mackenzie Mountains. Cambrian chronostratigraphy is that of Taylor et al. (2012). Also shown schematically is group/supergroup nomenclature for underlying Proterozoic (Ediacaran and Cryogenian) stratigraphy. Proterozoic and Cambrian are shown at different vertical scales. Influence of the Mackenzie Arch on the stratigraphic record is shown by the absence of Begadean to Delameran strata across much of the region, and by erosion down to the level of Katherine Group. See text for discussion of data sources.

View of Proterozoic and Paleozoic stratigraphy exposed in a ridge immediately north of Keele River in southern NTS 96D; view is roughly to the west from 64.256975°N, 127.560211°W. McClure and Abraham Plains formations belong to Katherine Group (Neoproterozoic); for details on these units, see Long and Turner (2012). Recessive notch between these units and Franklin Mountain Formation is underlain by red beds that previously were treated as a proximal facies of the Saline River Formation but are assigned to Nainlin Formation, newly defined herein. Stratigraphic thickness of Nainlin Formation is unmeasured at this site but is in the range of 50–100 m.

Probability density plots (dashed lines) and kernel density estimates (solid lines) of detrital zircon age distributions for different late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic strata from the Laurentia, Siberia, and North China Craton (NCC). The age peaks (Ma) are marked. Data source: Rae Group (Gp)—Turner et al. (2016); Rainbird et al. (2017); Tsezotene Formation (Fm) and Katherine Gp—Rainbird et al. (2017); Uy Gp—Rainbird et al. (1998); Khudoley et al. (2015); Diaoyutai Fm—Yang et al. (2012); this study; Qiaotou Fm—this study; Xinxing Fm—Yang et al. (2012); Shouxian Fm—this study. For ages younger than 1500 Ma, the 206Pb/238U age is used, whereas the 207Pb/206Pb age is used for zircon with ages older than 1500 Ma. All data based on analyses with ≤5% discordance. The patterned polygons depict three major age ranges: I—1.00–1.20 Ga; II—1.34–1.50 Ga; III—1.58–1.68 Ga. Probability density plots—Ludwig (2003); kernel density estimates—Vermeesch (2012).
