ABSTRACT Application of updated diatom biochronology to the Monterey Formation and related biosiliceous rocks reveals the imprint of both global paleoclimatic/paleoceanographic and regional tectonic events. A rise in global sea level combined with regional tectonic deepening associated with the development of the transform California margin resulted in the abrupt onset of deposition of fine-grained Monterey sediments that were relatively free from clastic debris between 18 and 16 Ma. The base of the Monterey Formation does not mark a silica shift in diatom deposition from the North Atlantic to the North Pacific Ocean. Rather, a North Atlantic Ocean decline of diatoms after ca. 13 Ma and increasing divergence in nutrient levels between the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans between ca. 13 and 11 Ma coincided with a major enhancement of diatom deposition in the Monterey Formation. A stratigraphically condensed interval of phosphate-rich sediments between 13 and 10 Ma in coastal southern California appears to have resulted from sediment starvation in offshore basins during a period of higher sea level, as inland sections such as those in the San Joaquin Valley commonly contain thick sequences of diatomaceous sediment. Increasing latitudinal thermal gradients in the latest Miocene, which triggered a biogenic bloom in the equatorial Pacific Ocean at 8 Ma, also led to enhanced diatom deposition in the uppermost Monterey Formation and overlying biosiliceous rocks. Uplift of the California coastal ranges after ca. 5.2 Ma resulted in an increasing detrital contribution that obscured the presence of diatoms in onshore sediments. Major reduction in coastal upwelling in the early Pliocene ca. 4.6 Ma then caused a drastic reduction of diatoms in sediments offshore southern California.

ABSTRACT Rock properties play a critical role in dictating styles of deformation at all spatial scales, yet the effect of changes across and within diagenetic transition zones has been little studied, despite profound impact on resulting mechanical stratigraphy. Our analysis of the variation of fold strain at map scale and outcrop scale of the highly siliceous Monterey and Sisquoc Formations in the southern Santa Maria Basin, California, provides insight into the interplay among deformation, diagenesis, and rock composition. Diagenetic modification of these rocks has created intervals with high interstratal and interformational contrasts in competence. Map-scale analysis showed large variation in fold strain within the same area, with shortening values ranging from 5.5% to 21.1% between siliceous formations of different diagenetic grade and competence. Apparent shortening in the competent, diagenetically altered, thinly bedded Monterey Formation is twice as high as that in the overlying highly porous, diatomaceous, more massive Sisquoc Formation. The large difference in measurable apparent shortening suggests that the same amount of actual strain was chiefly accommodated by folding in the Monterey Formation versus horizontal compaction in the Sisquoc Formation, since there is no evidence of a detachment between the units. Strain analysis at outcrop scale provided insight into the ways in which both units express such different shortening ratios without having an unconformity or detachment fault between them.

Abstract Opening-mode fractures in clinker and opal-CT chert spheroids form by growth and coalescence of pores, and are associated with extensive textural and compositional changes in the host material. Extensive inelastic deformation outside the immediate vicinity of fracture tips characterizes these fracture processes as ductile. Fracture formation in clinker is concurrent with high-temperature combustion alteration of diatomaceous mudstone. Fracture formation in chert spheroids is associated with the opal-CT to quartz transition in the same host material during early marine diagenesis. In both cases, growth of elongate pores is attributed to the combined effects of diffusive-fracture growth and flow by solution-precipitation creep. Pore growth and coalescence occur preferentially ahead of fracture tips along two directions oblique to the mean macroscopic fracture direction. This growth process, referred to as side-lobe damage, is interpreted to reflect the shear-stress dependence of pore growth by solution-precipitation creep. The tendency for oblique fracture growth is suppressed by global stress and strain-boundary conditions forcing the fracture along a characteristic zig-zag propagation path that is macroscopically perpendicular to the loading direction. These examples of ductile fracture demonstrate that macroscopic fracture formation is not uniquely associated with damage processes by microfracture at low-temperature ‘brittle’ subsurface conditions. Instead, fracture is a deformation process that can occur due to various inelastic-deformation mechanisms under diverse crustal environments, which include high-temperature conditions.

We review the most important types of volcanic hazards that have occurred in Nicaragua during the past ∼40,000 yr and that are expected to occur in the future. Population density within the potential hazard area is clearly essential in defining and understanding volcanic hazard and risk. There are three main groups of volcanic events that pose major hazards: Group 1 comprises several types of explosive volcanic eruptions that impact society (people and infrastructure) directly. The most hazardous types are pyroclastic surges, particularly those generated by water-magma interaction, pyroclastic fallout, and pyroclastic flows, as well as tsunamis generated by volcanic eruptions within and close to Nicaragua's large lakes. Group 2 includes nonexplosive volcanic activity such as lava flows and the permanent or episodic emission of volcanic gases from open vents. Group 3 comprises chiefly lahars generated by mixing of volcanic debris with water and volcano flank collapses (landslides) sometimes unrelated to synchronous volcanic eruptions but being conditioned chiefly by the stability of a volcanic edifice. We discuss the present database on the age and type of the most recent eruptions emphasizing those that potentially pose major hazards to the populated areas. These include volcanogenic tsunamis in Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua, scoria cone and maar formation chiefly in the western part of Managua, and major explosive eruptions of Chiltepe and Masaya volcanoes, a large eruption from Masaya volcano having devastated the entire area of present Managua only ∼2000 yr ago. We discuss the most important techniques for monitoring volcanoes to detect unrest and predict the time and magnitude of upcoming eruptions, emphasizing techniques presently employed in Nicaragua. Finally, we address the subjects of risk assessment, including hazard and risk maps, and the importance of long-term development plans to reduce vulnerability.

Abstract The classic Cambrian succession of SW Wales comprises a succession of clastic rocks some 1250 m thick that make up part of the Dyfed Supergroup. The existing lithostratigraphical framework owes much to the Nineteenth Century researchers, with relatively little detailed work having been published since. We here present a detailed, rationalized and revised lithostratigraphy for the Cambrian part of the Dyfed Supergroup of the area. Where possible and appropriate, we have retained original and well-known names for formations and other units in harmony with current usage. However, the recognition of four lithostratigraphical groups is overly complex and sometimes unworkable, and a two-fold subdivision is proposed instead. The Caerfai and much of the Lower and Middle Solva groups of earlier usage comprise conglomerates, pebbly sandstones and brightly coloured fine- to coarse-grained sandstones: all are here combined into a revised Caerfai Group. By excluding the silt-dominated Upper Solva division, the Caerfai Group is readily divided into lower and upper parts comprising conglomerates and/or pebbly sandstones, with sandstones and siltstones dominant in between. These rocks comprise the Ogof Golchfa (new), St Non's, Caerfai Bay, Caer Bwdy Bay, Newgale (new) and Porth Clais (new) formations. The following members (all new) are recognized within the Newgale Formation: the Trwyncynddeiriog, Pen-y-Cyfrwy and Cwm Mawr members. Ichnofossils from the upper part of the Ogof Golchfa Formation suggest that Cambrian deposition in the area began in Unnamed Cambrian Series 2 (C2) times. Body fossils and radiometric dating show that the Caerfai Bay to Porth Clais formations span the interval from Cambrian Series 2, Unnamed Cambrian Stage 3 (such stages are denoted by CS3, CS4 etc. below), probably to the Ptychagnostus gibbus Biozone (CS5). The former Upper Solva Group, Menevian Group and Lingula Flags comprise the newly erected Porth-y-rhaw Group, a 687 m-thick unit of fine sandstones, siltstones and mudstones, within which a further five formations are recognized. These are the Whitesands Bay, Menevia, Aber Llong (all new), Ogof Velvet (revised) and Treffgarne Bridge formations. The Porth-y-rhaw Group spans the Tomagnostus fissus Biozone (C3, Drumian) to the Olenus cataractes Biosubzone (Furongian, Paibian). The overall two-fold subdivision of the Cambrian part of the Dyfed Supergroup in the area accords broadly with the first lithostratigraphical scheme proposed for the area, and is comparable with the separation of the Harlech Grits and Mawddach groups in northern and central Wales. The oldest part of the Caerfai Group formed in a tectonically active context and records a transition from alluvial fan deposits, through braided stream environments, into transgressive nearshore marine sandstones. These sediments were derived from the west, and as well as locally-sourced material, include lithic clasts and grains derived from a presumed southwestwards extension of the Monian Composite Terrane. Above lie sedimentary deposits formed under a wide range of conditions, ranging from tidally-influenced to turbidites. Further evidence of active tectonism is found in the easterly-derived fan-delta sedimentary deposits of the higher part of the Caerfai Group and lower part of the Porth-y-rhaw Group. Deposition of the latter began with fine-grained turbidites deposited in a mid–outer shelf setting. These pass up first into hemipelagites, then into sedimentary rocks deposited on a storm-dominated shelf, and finally a very extensive shallow subaqueous delta platform formed in a passive margin setting.
