... rise, reef islands are thought to be on an erosional trajectory. Jaluit Atoll in the Marshall Islands was struck by Typhoon Ophelia in A.D. 1958, causing significant geomorphic change to reef islands. Using aerial photographs as well as recent satellite imagery we track the impacts of the typhoon...

A: Jaluit Atoll in the southern Marshall Islands. B: Jaluit Atoll showing islands studied. A map of all islands examined is provided in the Data Repository (see footnote 1). Storm path and estimates of wind and wave conditions are redrawn from Blumenstock (1961). Blumenstock (1961, p. 8) estimated the “minimum speeds of first strong winds” based on vegetation damage and geomorphic evidence. Wavy arrows show the direction of dominant water movement; arrow length indicates the degree of inundation.

... his theoretical position he systematically misrepresented the geomorphic history of, for example, the Lau Islands, Eua, the Loyalty Islands, Jaluit Atoll and Mangaia. Not surprisingly this work did not impress contemporaries who had experience of these reefs in the field. Hence in Darwin’s reef...

...Edwin D. McKee Abstract Sediments deposited by a typhoon that struck Jaluit atoll (Marshall islands) in 1958 consist largely of pebble- to boulder- size gravel, derived in part from reef-front material, which forms sheets across inundated islets and ridges on windward shores and on the reef flat...

... Pacific atolls, like Jaluit in the Marshall group, were provided with centrally located islands that would make ideal drill sites for a test of the subsidence theory. Unfortunately, Bikini had no such central island. Eniwetok has a coral knoll, located 4 miles out in the lagoon, that breaks water at low...
