...I. M. Mason Abstract A high proportion of faces started in mechanized coal mines run into underground faults. The faults take many forms, from the splitting of a seam through a hidden stress pattern caused by subsidence or folding, to a washout or a vertical throw. All faults reduce face output...

...', and their detection and delineation in the subsurface is of paramount importance. A palaeochannel system in the roof of the High Hazles Coal (Westphalian B) at Gedling Colliery, Nottinghamshire, is described. The roof strata of this seam are interpreted as the deposits of a lacustrine delta complex formed on an upper...

High Hazles cannels are tracked from outcrops through Creswell and Whitwell mining data to Gainsborough. In the west, cannel is present in the full seam, which splits eastwards. The resulting coalbeds both include cannel. Cannel in the united seam and lower coalbed is shown in lighter green, the upper coalbed in darker green. Figure 16 uses 66 cored boreholes and mine data, many other boreholes proved no cannel. The NCB mapped details in the red box.

The 1:10 560 scale ‘seam plans’ were the main source of mine plan data for the VULCAN model. These plans are held at the Mining Records Office, from where paper...
