The δ13C curve through the Darriwilian Guniutan Formation at the Maocaopu section, Hunan Province, southern China. Conodont biostratigraphy is after Zhang (1998b). It should be noted that the 0 m level and lowest sample level correspond to the 4.7 m level in the section of Zhang (1998b); also that her Dzikodus tablepointensis Zone corresponds exactly to the Baltoscandian Eoplacognathuspseudoplanus Zone. As shown in the diagram, there is a gradual increase in δ13C values in the lower half of the Microzarkodina ozarkodella Subzone that marks the beginning of the MDICE, the peak values of which are in the upper half of this subzone. The MDICE is cut off by the unconformity at the top of the Guniutan Formation (shown by a wavy line), where there is a significant stratigraphic gap corresponding to the Eoplacognathus suecicus and Pygodus serra zones. The close similarity between this curve and that of the Hällekis Quarry in terms of curve shape and peak δ13C values should be noted. The δ13C values through the collected interval in the lower part of the Datianba Formation are relatively uniform and are interpreted as being post-MDICE.

The δ13C curve through the Darriwilian Guniutan Formation at the Puxi River section near Fenxiang, Hubei Province, southern China. Lithology and conodont biostratigraphy are after Schmitz et al. (2008). The δ13C baseline values between c. +0.5‰ and +1‰ through the Yangtzeplacognathus crassus Zone and lower Microzarkodina hagetiana Subzone are similar to those in the coeval interval in the Maocaopu succession, as is also the appearance of the gradually elevated δ13C values of the MDICE in the uppermost Microzarkodina hagetiana and the Microzarkodina ozarkodella subzones. The abnormal negative δ13C values in the uppermost Guniutan Formation may reflect the influx of meteoric water at unconformities.

Stratigrapic summary diagram illustrating the biostratigraphy, lithostratigraphy, vertical range of formations, and the presence of stratigraphic gaps (vertical ruling) in the study successions. The apparent stratigraphical completeness of the Mehikoorma (421) section compared with the other successions should be noted. A comparison between the Puxi and Maocaopu sections clearly indicates that the base of the Guniutan Formation is diachronous across the Yangtze Platform, as has previously been suggested by Chen et al. (1995).
