Core lithology and abundances of major taxonomic calcareous nannofossil categories in core LRG12–3PC (on the Lomonosov Ridge; 87.7247°N, 54.4253°W). Bulk density is proxy for grain-size variations (high bulk density = coarser-grained sediments) and is displayed alongside digital core image showing dark-brown, Mn-enriched bioturbated units associated with interglacial/interstadial sediments (mbsf—meters below seafloor). E. huxleyi—Emiliania huxleyi; C. pelagicus—Coccolithus pelagicus; P. lacunosa—Pseudoemiliania lacunosa; G. caribbeanica—Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica; G. muellerae—Gephyrocapsa muellerae; VSG—very small Gephyrocapsa (<2 µm).

(A) Factor analysis biplot for the Mira estuary (Portugal) records. Defined clusters A (oceanic affinity communities) and B (coastal affinity communities) are indicated by blue and red ellipses, respectively. Lettered taxonomic correspondence: Ascid—ascidians; BB—Braarudosphaera bigelowii; CL—Calcidiscus leptoporus; CM—Coronosphaera mediterranea; CP—Coccolithus pelagicus spp. braarudii; GM—Gephyrocapsa muellerae; GO—Gephyrocapsa oceanica; HC—Helicosphaera carteri; Sy—Syracosphaera spp.; US—Umbilicosphaera sibogae. (B) Ideal atmospheric and oceanic conditions for upwelling/downwelling processes in Iberian North Atlantic margin (INAM) and their relationship with interpretation of factor analysis results. Black arrows indicate most favorable wind direction, whereas colored arrows indicate marine regime (top—downwelling; bottom—upwelling).

Downcore variations of biometric and compositional data of the genus Gephyrocapsa collected at the ODP Site 964 during the Early Pleistocene, plotted versus depth in rmcd. From the left, the biostratigraphic framework, following Sprovieriet alii (1998); Sapropel layers’ setting (Emeiset alii, 2000b); Relative abundance of the taxonomic units, very small Gephyrocapsa, G. caribbeanica, G. oceanica, G. omega and G. muellerae identified in the study; Biometric data collected on the long axis of placoliths, grouped every 0.5 μm. Taxonomic units used by Rioet alii (1990) for biostratigraphic purposes, small Gephyrocapsa, medium Gephyrocapsa and large Gephyrocapsa are also indicated. Black arrows mark biohorizons that may reinforce the LO of C. macintyrei in terrigenous sections. Light grey bands show sample where severe dissolution processes led to the disappearance of most of Gephyrocapsa spp. specimens.
