The entire depositional sequence is called the Geiseltal Formation and it is the stratotype of the European Land Mammal Megazone Geiseltalian ( Speijer et al. 2020 ). The fossil flora was part of a subtropical peat bog...

Stratigraphic profile from the brown coal (lignite) and clastic sediment formations of the Geiseltal Fossillagerstätte, within the Geiseltal coal mine. ‘Ce III’ marks the location from which the fossil GMH 6074 was recovered (Cecilie Pit), within a brown coal deposit belonging to the ‘Oberes Hauptmittel’. This layer is within the upper part of Mammal Paleogene (MP) Zone 13, at the end of the Geiseltalian European Land Mammal Age. The region of the mine from which the fossil was recovered has also been referred to as ‘Neumark West’, and the fossil locality in particular has been referred to as ‘Leichenfeld II’. The profile has been compiled and modified from Weigelt (1933), Lincke (1977), Franzen and Haubold (1987), Haubold (1995), and Aguilar et al. (1997). Formation abbreviations (from bottom to top): BK  =  Basiskohle (basal coal seam); BHM  =  Basishauptmittel (basal intermediate layer); UK  =  Unterkohle (lower coal seam); UHM  =  Unteres Hauptmittel (lower intermediate layer); uMK  =  untere Mittelkohle (lower part of the middle coal seam); MHM  =  Mittleres Hauptmittel (middle intermediate layer); oMK  =  obere Mittelkohle (upper part of the middle coal seam); OHM  =  Oberes Hauptmittel (upper intermediate layer); OK  =  Oberkohle (upper coal seam).
