Cross section along the line indicated in Figure 1 showing the tectonic setting in the western HSZ. The geometry of slab and continental crust is based on results from seismological (Endrun et al., 2004) and refraction seismic studies (Bohnhoff et al., 2001). The solid lines indicate well-constrained boundaries, location accuracy ±5 km for the Moho, and the dashed lines denote assumed structural boundaries. (a) Seismicity from 1964–2006 according to the relocated ISCEHB catalog. The location accuracy for relocated ISC events is generally better than 20 km when the azimuthal gap is smaller than 180° (Bondar et al., 2003). The black line indicates the extent of the presumed rupture surface of the 365 A.D. Crete event according to Papazachos (1996). (b) Microseismic activity with ML>1.7 in the same region as observed by temporary short period networks on western Crete and the island of Gavdos (Meier et al., 2004). The location accuracy of the microseismic events is on the order of ±10 km. Events with a distance of up to 50 km from the profile are used for both projections.

..., highly calcareous marls—a transition often accompanied by input of detrital limestones. Where this transition is sharp, e.g. in locations 9 and 30 ( Fig. 2 ), we were able to date it at 6.72 Ma; elsewhere, in location 16 ( Fig. 2 ), this transition is gradual. On the island of Gavdos, south of Crete...
