...J. Brendan Murphy Abstract The Neoproterozoic Gamble Brook Formation in the Avalon Terrane of Nova Scotia consists of quartzitic, pelitic, and psammitic metasedimentary rocks. The formation is generally interpreted to have been deposited in an Atlantic-type passive margin setting along...

.... Contrasts in ages and rock types resulted in the identification of fault-bounded Neoproterozoic assemblages of units forming the Bass River, Jeffers, and Mount Ephraim blocks. In the Bass River block, quartzite, metawacke, and minor calc-silicate rocks and marble (Gamble Brook Formation) with a maximum...

Ediacaran youngest detrital zircon age populations, except for a quartzite unit within the Gamble Brook Formation in the Cobequid Highlands of Nova Scotia, which showed a Tonian maximum depositional age, and otherwise a nearly identical detrital zircon signature with rocks from the southeastern New England...

Summary εNdt versus time (Ga) diagrams showing isotopic data from the Gamble Brook Formation, Nova Scotia, compared with the main arc phase in West Avalonia. Due to uncertainty in the depositional age of the formation, εNdt is calculated for t=1000 Ma and 650 Ma (t1 and t2, table 3). For each sample, the tie-line connecting the calculated εNd values for these ages represents the hypothetical evolution of εNd in the source area over this time period. The field for West Avalonian rocks (stipples) is from Nance and Murphy (1996).

Neoproterozoic reconstructions before (A) and after (B) the breakup of Rodinia (modified from Dalziel 1997). Although the fit between Australia-Antarctica and Laurentia is controversial (see Karlstrom et al. 1999), this does not affect the model presented here. A, Rodinia from ca. 1000 to 800 Ma, showing the location of the Grenville collisional belt. B, Following ca. 760 breakup of Rodinia, Avalonian terranes are accreted to the Gondwanan margin before the main arc phase at ca. 630 Ma. AM=A  mazonia, BA=B  altica, WA=W  est Africa. The depositional setting of the Gamble Brook Formation is along the Gondwanan margin inboard of juvenile proto-Avalonian terranes. However, it is unclear whether deposition occurred before (A) or after (B) the breakup of Rodinia.
