... saturation perfectly coincides with the flat truncation of salt units in the abyssal plain, raising the possibility that the truncation was caused by dissolution rather than by erosion. We suggest that dissolution occurred above the chemocline of a stratified water body with a halite-saturated...

... conglomerates. Mud drapes over bedforms and layers — where ripples are preserved, mud drapes thin over the tops of the ripples and thicken over their flanks, forming a flat or almost flat upper surface; if the bedforms are not well pronounced then mudstone may cover a set of cross-stratified grainstone...

A low-resolution sparker seismic reflection line defines a submerged delta off Flat Island (Fig. 1; Forbes and Shaw 1989). It shows an irregular bedrock platform with an overlying drape of glaciomarine mud. At the left side of the record, the early post-glacial submerged delta of Flat Bay Brook is buried by sandy barrier-platform deposits that are stratified in places; elsewhere, the barrier platform sediments show evidence of the slumping and submarine fan development that has been documented on the modern barrier platform (Shaw and Courtney 1997). The delta bottomset beds can be traced some distance seaward, beyond which they are obscured by the strong surface “ringing” on the record (a 4-m-thick layer of dark lines parallel to the surface). See text for discussion of sediment cores.
