Figure 3. Dentition of early Eocene Eotitanops pakistanensis n. sp., from the upper Ghazij Formation in Pakistan; ×1.6. 1, 2, GSP-UM 6558 (holotype) left P4–M3 in labial (1) and occlusal (2) view; note the low, weakly dilambdodont tooth crowns with a parastyle cingular shelf and strongly developed molar ribs, and the triangular M3 that is subequal to M2.

Figure 8. Correlation chart comparing the ages of appearance of the oldest primitive early brontothere EotitanopsOsborn, 1907 in Pakistan and in Wyoming; the age of Eotitanops pakistanensis n. sp. in Pakistan is constrained by the transition from magnetochron C24R to C24N near the base of the Upper Ghazij Formation (Clyde et al., 2003; lower asterisk) and by reference of the Drug Limestone to planktonic foraminferal zone P9 (Afzal, 1996, and Berggren and Pearson, 2005; upper asterisk); shaded range superimposed on the upper Ghazij Formation shows reasonable age limits for the transition from lower to upper parts of the upper Ghazij Formation when brontotheres first appear; the age of Eotitanops borealis (Cope, 1880) in Wyoming is constrained to lie within C23R (Clyde et al., 2001, 2004); it is not possible to determine whether the first appearance of E. pakistanensis is older or younger than that of E. borealis in North America; if we were to correlate the base of the Bridgerian land-mammal age to chron C22R, as advocated by Smith et al. (2004), then the first appearance of Eotitanops in Pakistan would be substantially earlier than that in Wyoming.

Figure 4. Strict consensus tree of 16 most parsimonious trees, based on the dedicated data matrix in the appendix; numbers at the base of each clade indicate unambiguous synapomorphies; E. pakistanensis n. sp. is unambiguously grouped with the two previously known species of Eotitanops from North America; Balochititanops haqi n. gen. n. sp. is placed at a more advanced stage of evolution than Eotitanops, closer to BunobrontopsHolroyd and Ciochon, 2000 and other bronotheriine brontotheres.

Eotitanops minimus Osborn, 1919 was excluded because its character data is redundant with Eotitanops borealis (Cope...
