... and development of sandstone overhangs and rockshelters are much rarer (Raynal, 1975; Styles and others, 1983). This reflects a somewhat glaring gap in the geological and geoarchaeological literature as sandstone rockshelters are not uncommon in many parts of the New and Old Worlds. Indeed, in some areas...

Map showing location of major trail (dotted) across Kīlauea’s summit probably used by Keōua’s party. Hatched area indicates most likely location of Keōua’s encampment, as judged from the description of Bloxam (1925) and the favorable coincidence of water and flat terrain. Stars indicate sites of photographs in Figure 5. Also shown are localities at which the pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) of unit VIII have been observed; queried sites are those where the deposit could be ash cloud or eolian-reworked lithic ash rather than a pyroclastic density current deposit. Dashed line shows approximate limit of the pyroclastic density current deposits, including the queried sites. Also shown are localities where footprints on the surface of unit X have been studied; the southwest distribution of most of the prints is along and parallel to the major trail. Note that some of these localities are within the area covered by the VIII pyroclastic density currents. We interpret most of the fatalities to have occurred within the core area covered by the pyroclastic density currents. Topographic contour interval = 60 m.

Structural and kinematic data from structural domains. The top of each image shows stereograms of poles to slip surfaces (circles) and lineations (triangles). The bottom of each image shows composite fault plane solution for all slip surfaces in each domain. Circles are P axes; squares are T axes. P is the mean shortening axis; T is the mean extension axis. Technique of Marrett and Allmendinger (1990), FaultKin, version 4.3x (Allmendinger et al. 2003). A, Quartzite Peak domain. N=80. B, Bridger Peak domain. N=56. C, Lost Creek domain. N (slip surfaces )=55; N (lineations )=35; N (kinematic data )=14. D, Encampment River domain. N=20. E, Beaver Creek domain. N=16. F, Haggarty Creek domain. N=41. Scatter in structural and kinematic data may be due to partitioning of strain in the Haggarty Creek area between a dominantly north-northwest-directed thrust component of motion along moderately to gently southeast-dipping slip surfaces (shaded region in F, top) and a largely strike-slip component of movement along approximately east-west- to northwest-striking subvertical slip surfaces (white region in F, top).
