In Fig. 3D, the matrix has been digitally removed; the arrow indicates the fractured radius of the right wing. (E and F) Right foot in (E) medial and (F) lateral view; the toes are numbered. (G) Holotype of Songzia acutunguis (Songziidae) from the Ypresian Yangxi Formation in China (IVPP 18188). Abbreviations: cmc, carpometacarpus; hum, humerus; ito, intratendinous ossification; pda, phalanx digiti alulae; pdm, phalanx distalis digiti majoris; ppm, phalanx proximalis digiti majoris; rad, radius; uln, ulna. Histograms of n-alkane abundance per chain length for representative samples from each site. This includes all the samples from Falkland, all mudstone samples from Driftwood Canyon, several Driftwood Canyon shale samples that showcase their variation, the only coal sample at Driftwood Canyon with high n-alkane abundance, and noteworthy samples from McAbee, including an average distribution plotted to account for the high sample size at that site. Note, an asterisk denotes chain lengths which were just above the detection limit but not quantified due to coelution with hopanes.
