Simplified Geological Map of Albania-Southern area. The geology of south-western Albania shows the overthrust of Meso-Cenozoic basinal units over the Cretaceous platform succession cropping out in the Karaburun Peninsula and in the island of Sazan (bricks pattern). Thrust units comprise most of the Meso-Cenozoic succession and detach within or at the base of the upper Triassic carbonates. Palaeogene turbidites, belonging to the basinal domain, crop out in the small islands (lower part of the figure) located just north of Corfu. Line Alb-04 crosses a lateral ramp that brings the thrust front to the west of the island of Corfu. Location of fig. 7 (bold line) and of part of the regional geological cross section B (fig. 8) are also indicated. B-K = Borsh-Khardhiqit line. After Ministry of Industry and Mining (1983).

Example of reverse discordance most likely caused by U loss or Pb gain during a metamorphic overprint, as suggested by the high degree of collinearity of the data and the lower-intercept age of 424 ± 20 Ma, which corresponds to the Caledonian orogeny affecting this region. The zircon population is from a Paleoproterozoic gabbro (Hamn gabbro) on the island of Senja, northern Norway (Corfu, 2005, personal observation). MSWD—mean square of weighted deviates.

Area of study and locations of the maximum intensities of the nine reappraised earthquakes. The “United States of the Ionian Islands” (1815–1864) comprised the seven islands of Corfu, Paxoi, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kephalonia, Zakynthos, and Cythera (offshore western Greece). Different symbols indicate the number of earthquakes (Neqs) at the places where a maximum intensity was assigned for each of the nine earthquakes discussed in this article, and namely 3 at Zakynthos (29 December 1820, 30 October 1840, and 26 February 1841), 2 at Lefkada (21 February 1824 and 19 January 1825), 2 at Kephalonia (5 June 1834 and 14 March 1862), 1 at Lalas (6 January 1821), and 1 at Pyrgos (3 August 1837).

B. Pb-Pb diagram showing the collinear array of titanite and galena analyses. Except for the data point in the upper-right corner, the error ellipses are smaller than the surrounding box. C. Pb-Pb diagram with two analyses of High Rock Island galena. Also indicated are the fields for Pb in volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits of the Superior province (Thorpe, 1999), the field for Pb in Superior province gold deposits (from Thorpe, 1999, modified based on data from Gulson et al., 1993), and the Pb composition of old crust in the Winnipeg River subprovince (Corfu, 1988). "Campbell Red Lake" indicates the most primitive Pb measured in sulfide of this deposit (Gulson et al., 1993). S & K is the model growth curve for terrestrial Pb of Stacey and Kramers (1975).
