Abstract The Carquinez Strait (Alfred Zampa Memorial) Bridge ((Figs. 1 ) and 2 ) is the first new toll bridge in California built to the stringent post-1989 performance-based design standards. This field trip consists of two stops that provide opportunities to observe the bridge site and discuss details of the design of the structure. The first stop on the south overlook of the strait provides an overview of the site. The second stop on the north side of the strait will start on the bicycle and pedestrian path plaza and will continue across the bridge.
