Candidate sources for the 1531 earthquake and tsunami. MT, Montejunto thrust; OF, Ota fault; AF, Azambuja fault; BF, Benavente fault; VFXF, Vila Franca de Xira fault; PNF, Pinhal Novo fault; and TIE, Tagus inner estuary. The crossed lines correspond to the epicenter location as given by Boxer (Gasperini et al., 1999), and the star corresponds to the location of the 1909 earthquake. The color version of this figure is available only in the electronic edition.

▴ Regional geology of the study area. Figure 2 encloses the same area as Figure 1B. The Azambuja fault (AF) and Vila Franca de Xira fault (VFX) are shown according to Cabral (2004). White and black squares in Entroncamento and Pombalinho indicate the location of photo mosaics in Figures 3 and 4, respectively. A black circle shows the location of the exposures near Cartaxo.

Schematic section of sedimentary facies distribution for the Morro do Chaves Formation. This shows wedges of coquina (Morro do Chaves Formation) prograding from the flexural margin westwards towards the basin centre. Associated with the fault, fan-deltas (the Coqueiro Seco and Rio Pitanga formations) are shown prograding eastwards towards the basin centre. The shales have been interpreted as representing lowstand deposits, with evidence of sub-areal exposure provided by the presence of mud cracks (Azambuja et al. 1998).
