Lonmin's Akanani Project is located on the Platreef within the central sector of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex ( McDonald & Holwell 2011 , van der Merwe et al. 2012...

...A.A. MITCHELL; R.N. SCOON Abstract Detailed logging of relatively deep drill-core from the Akanani Project, in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, has afforded new perspectives on the Platreef and its origins. In line with most recent studies, we believe the mineralization...

Exploded block diagram of the Platreef in the vicinity of the Akanani project, showing schematic down-dip sections at intervals moving northwards. The uppermost layers of PU2 harzburgite that in part define the MMR, and are associated with generally higher-grade mineralization than those below, are indicated in black for clarity, although they are petrographically identical to the normal PU2 harzburgite.

Generalized stratigraphic logs of the borehole cores studied. Logs show the position of the top and basal contacts of the Platreef and the location of the chromitite seams. Borehole columns are arranged along strike of the Platreef from west (Akanani project area, ZF) to east (Zwartfontein, ZN) and from north to south through the farms Zwartfontein (ZN), Vaalkop (VK), Sandsloot (SS) and Tweefontein (TN).

Chondrite-normalized PGE patterns of (A) reef harzburgite (circle, dotted line), chromitite (rectangle) and uneconomic pyroxenite (cross) from the Akanani project area of the deep Platreef (ZF116 and ZF48 boreholes), and of (B) reef pyroxenite (cross) from Sandsloot (SS203 borehole). Patterns of the UG2 chromitite (heavy line in A) on Waterval (Naldrett et al. 2012) and the Merensky Reef on Townlands (heavy line in B) (Naldrett et al. 2009a) are given for comparison. Chondrite values are from Lodders (2003).

Backscattered-electron images showing the morphology, texture, and mineral assemblages of Pt- and Pd-bismuthotellurides in the Platreef of the Akanani Project. Amp = amphibole, Ccp = chalcopyrite, Chl = chlorite, Cpx = clinopyroxene, Gn = galena, Mgt = magnetite, Opx = orthopyroxene, PbTe = altaite, PdBiTe = Pd-bismuthotellurides (kotulskite–sobolevskite and michenerite), Phl = phlogopite, Pn = pentlandite, Po = pyrrhotite, PtTeBi = Pt-bismuthotellurides (moncheite–maslovite), RhAsS = hollingworthite, Srp = serpentine. The chemical compositions of the Pt- and Pd-bismuthotellurides are indicated, e.g., PtTeBi = Te > Bi, and PtBiTe = Bi > Te.
