The influence of the Carpathian Mountains on the variability of stable isotopes in precipitation and the relationship with large-scale atmospheric circulation Available to Purchase
Abstract In this chapter, we analyse the influence of the Carpathian Mountains on the variability of stable isotopes in precipitation by employing a combination of observed and model data. Overall, the mean value of the stable isotopes in precipitation over the Carpathian Mountains, based on observational data, was −9.8‰ for δ 18 O and −68.6‰ for δ 2 H. The local meteoric line, using all samples from the study sites, was δ 2 H = 7.65 × δ 18 O + 5.82. The simulated δ 18 O, based on the ECHAM5-wiso isotopes enable model, showed good agreement with the observed isotopic data. By comparing all the monthly values of the observed isotopic data from all analysed stations and the corresponding model data, a correlation coefficient of 0.76 (n = 455, p < 0.001) was obtained. The spatial distribution of the simulated δ 18 O values in precipitation had the lowest values over the Romanian Carpathian Mountains and the highest values over the extra-Carpathian area, with the maximum in southeastern Romania. This pattern was strongly influenced by the Carpathian Mountains orography. Using the simulated δ 18 O data, we show that the spatial distribution of the δ 18 O values increases with temperature and decreases with altitude and latitude (−0.5‰ for δ 18 O per degree of latitude). The continental gradient is characterized by a polynomial trend of the second degree in the form of a large-open ‘U’ shape, and the general pattern of the δ 18 O values follows the spatial distribution of the Carpathian Mountains.
Using ratios in cave guano to assess past environmental changes Available to Purchase
Abstract Stable isotope ratios of cave bat guano reflect environmental influences at the soil and plant level within the foraging range of the bats. Carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen isotopes have utility in reconstructing precipitation and temperature as well as in tracing the influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation and climate variability. Guano-derived stable isotope time series have been demonstrated to effectively provide high-resolution records of palaeoenvironmental variation from the late Pleistocene to present. Owing to their influence on these isotopes, factors such as bat ecology, species foraging range and site location must be considered when interpreting such records. Research analysing the isotopic composition of guano has provided a highly resolved history of vegetation and climate dynamics previously less understood. In this chapter we discuss the factors influencing the δ 13 C, δ 15 N and δ 2 H values in guano and provide an up-to-date review of cave guano as palaeo-climate archive.

Middle Miocene evolution and structural style of the Diapir Fold Zone, Eastern Carpathian Bend Zone, Romania: insights from scaled analogue modelling Available to Purchase
Abstract The Diapir Fold Zone of the Carpathians is the most prolific onshore hydrocarbon area in Romania. Structural complexity, mainly due to the presence of salt, combined with poor seismic quality near and below the salt lead to contrasting structural models in the area. To gain insights into the mid-Miocene tectonic evolution, structural geometries and the effects of penetrative strain, we ran dual décollement scaled sandbox models with layered brittle and ductile materials. Results of two analogue models (20 and 33% shortening) revealed that the onset of the deformation sequence was mainly characterized by layer-parallel shortening. As shortening continued, a foreland-verging sequence of supra-salt detachment folds and sub-salt duplexes evolved. The sub-salt duplexes are located directly below the crests of the detachment folds, as the development of these large wavelength anticlines was related to sub-salt deformation. Salt flow was another controlling factor of the deformation style, as salt accumulated in the anticlinal cores and increased the coupling in the supra-salt synclinal axis. Our results offer insights into the effects of salt on the kinematic evolution of this area, help to predict geometries in areas of poor seismic quality, and highlight the important contribution of penetrative strain on deformation and reservoir quality.

History of the oil and gas industry in Romania Available to Purchase
Abstract Oil and gas activities in Romania cover a long time interval from antiquity until the present day. Most importantly, the year 1857 represents the starting point for industrial production in Romania when three world oil firsts were achieved: the first country with a crude oil production formally recorded in domestic and international statistics (275 tons); the first petroleum industrial refinery, located in Ploiești, with a processing capacity of 7.5 tons/day; Bucharest became the first city in the world to have public illumination, using lamp oils. After 1857, the evolution of the oil and gas industry in Romania was controlled by important historical events: World Wars I and II, the communist regime (1945–89), and the post-communist period (1990–today).
Oligocene and Lower Miocene source rocks in the Paratethys: palaeogeographical and stratigraphic controls Available to Purchase
Abstract Oligocene and Lower Miocene deposits in the Paratethys are important source rocks, but reveal major stratigraphic and regional differences. As a consequence of the first Paratethys isolation, source rocks with very good oil potential accumulated during Early Oligocene time in the Central Paratethys. Coeval source rocks in the Eastern Paratethys are characterized by a lower source potential. With the exception of the Carpathian Basin and the eastern Kura Basin, the source potential of Upper Oligocene and Lower Miocene units is low. In general, this is also valid for rocks formed during the second (Kozakhurian) isolation of the Eastern Paratethys. However, upwelling along a shelf-break canyon caused deposition of prolific diatomaceous source rocks in the western Black Sea. Overall, Oligocene–Lower Miocene sediments in the Carpathian Basin (Menilite Formation) can generate up to 10 t HC m −2 . Its high petroleum potential is a consequence of the interplay of very high productivity of siliceous organisms and excellent preservation in a deep silled basin. In contrast, the petroleum potential of Oligocene–Lower Miocene (Maikopian) sediments in the Eastern Paratethys is surprisingly low (often <2 t HC m −2). It is, therefore, questionable whether these sediments are the only source rocks in the Eastern Paratethys.
