Magmatically driven hydrocarbon generation and fluid flow in the Namibe Basin of Angola Open Access
Abstract Magmatic activity can severely alter the thermal structure of a sedimentary basin, with variable effects on the petroleum system. The Namibe Basin of Angola (Cretaceous South Atlantic rift) contains well-exposed magmatic and petroleum system elements and allows integrated assessment of how magmatic activity can modify the petroleum system. The basin was affected by syn-rift and post-rift magmatic events, and bitumen is observed within both the Pre- and Post-Salt stratigraphical sections. In the Pre-Salt, fluorescent bitumen has a lacustrine signature and is associated with calcite and quartz cements. Onshore Pre-Salt units are thermally immature, and therefore the source rock that generated the Pre-Salt bitumen is likely located offshore. Hydrocarbons migrated or re-migrated via magmatically driven fluids, reaching the present-day onshore. Closer to magmatic units, non-fluorescent pyrobitumen was instead observed, evidencing hydrocarbon cracking processes following emplacement. In the Post-Salt, bitumen is in situ and shows marine-like signatures compatible with an immediate Post-Salt source rock depositional environment. In the immediate Post-Salt, units with very high total organic carbon values (TOC; up to 13.8%) and excellent source rock properties (hydrogen index >600 mgHC g −1 TOC) have reached thermal maturation. Within the Namibe Basin these Post-Salt source units lie in proximity to major Turonian–Coniacian–Santonian volcanic centres and associated shallow intrusions, which are likely to have caused thermally forced maturation processes and generation of the Post-Salt hydrocarbons. This paper demonstrates the importance of an integrated field, petrographic and geochemical approach in unravelling the influence of magmatic activity on basin thermal structure and petroleum systems.
The Atlantic Jigsaw Puzzle and the geoheritage of Angola Open Access
Abstract The jigsaw-puzzle fit of South America and Africa is an icon of plate tectonics and continental drift. Fieldwork in Angola since 2002 allows the correlation of onshore outcrops and offshore geophysical and well-core data in the context of rift, sag, salt, and post-salt drift phases of the opening of the central South Atlantic. These outcrops, ranging in age from >130 Ma to <71 Ma, record Early Cretaceous outpouring of the Etendeka–Paraná Large Igneous Province (Bero Volcanic Complex) and rifting, followed by continental carbonate and siliciclastic deposition (Tumbalunda Formation) during the sagging of the nascent central South Atlantic basin. By the Aptian, evaporation of sea water resulted in thick salt deposits (Bambata Formation), terminated by seafloor spreading. The Equatorial Atlantic Gateway began opening by the early Late Cretaceous (100 Ma) and allowed flow of currents between the North and South Atlantic, creating environmental conditions that heralded the introduction of marine reptiles. These dramatic outcrops are a unique element of geoheritage because they arguably comprise the most complete terrestrially exposed geological record of the puzzle-like icon of continental drift.

The amalgamation of Gondwana: calcite twinning and finite strains from the early–late Paleozoic Buzios, Ross, Kurgiakh and Gondwanide orogens Available to Purchase
Abstract Orientated carbonate (calcite twinning strains; n = 78 with 2414 twin measurements) and quartzites (finite strains; n = 15) were collected around Gondwana to study the deformational history associated with the amalgamation of the supercontinent. The Buzios orogen (545–500 Ma), within interior Gondwana, records the high-grade collisional orogen between the São Francisco Craton (Brazil) and the Congo–Angola Craton (Angola and Namibia), and twinning strains in calc-silicates record a SE–NW shortening fabric parallel to the thrust transport. Along Gondwana's southern margin, the Saldanian–Ross–Delamerian orogen (590–480 Ma) is marked by a regional unconformity that cuts into deformed Neoproterozoic–Ordovician sedimentary rocks and associated intrusions. Cambrian carbonate is preserved in the central part of the southern Gondwana margin, namely in the Kango Inlier of the Cape Fold Belt and the Ellsworth, Pensacola and Transantarctic mountains. Paleozoic carbonate is not preserved in the Ventana Mountains in Argentina, in the Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas or in Tasmania. Twinning strains in these Cambrian carbonate strata and synorogenic veins record a complex, overprinted deformation history with no stable foreland strain reference. The Kurgiakh orogen (490 Ma) along Gondwana's northern margin is also defined by a regional Ordovician unconformity throughout the Himalaya; these rocks record a mix of layer-parallel and layer-normal twinning strains with a likely Himalayan (40 Ma) strain overprint and no autochthonous foreland strain site. Conversely, the Gondwanide orogen (250 Ma) along Gondwana's southern margin has three foreland (autochthonous) sites for comparison with 59 allochthonous thrust-belt strain analyses. From west to east, these include: finite strains from Devonian quartzite preserve a layer-parallel shortening (LPS) strain rotated clockwise in the Ventana Mountains of Argentina; frontal (calcite twins) and internal (quartzite strains) samples in the Cape Fold Belt preserve a LPS fabric that is rotated clockwise from the autochthonous north–south horizontal shortening in the foreland strain site; Falkland Devonian quartzite shows the same clockwise rotation of the LPS fabric; and Permian limestone and veins in Tasmania record a thrust transport-parallel LPS fabric. Early amalgamation of Gondwana (Ordovician) is preserved by local layer-parallel and layer-normal strain without evidence of far-field deformation, whereas the Gondwanide orogen (Permian) is dominated by layer-parallel shortening, locally rotated by dextral shear along the margin, that propagated across the supercontinent.

An automatic approach for characterization of the thermal maturity of dispersed organic matter Raman spectra at low diagenetic stages Available to Purchase
Abstract An automatic approach for analyses of Raman spectra of dispersed organic matter in diagenesis is proposed in this work. The need for a reproducible method of thermal maturity assessment by means of Raman spectroscopic analyses on the organic matter is essential for the development of this technique as a robust support in organic petrographical analyses. The new method was tested on concentrated kerogen derived from a set of 33 samples that originated from cuttings from a 5000 m-thick section drilled in offshore Angola. The proposed method can be applied separately in the D and G bands regions of the Raman spectra, and uses a fitting approach based on asymmetrical Gaussian deconvolution and on the measurement of the integrated area. Results from this work demonstrate that Raman parameters carried out by the new methods reflect the increase in aromaticity in kerogen in diagenesis. Finally, two parametric equations have been proposed to correlate Raman parameters and thermal maturity: the first is for the thermal maturity interval between 0.3 and 1.5% R o ; and the second has a higher precision of between 1.0 and 1.5% R o . The two equations are the result of a multi-linear regression based on robust correlations between Raman parameters and vitrinite reflectance (R o %).
