Synrift and post-rift thermal evolution of rifted margins: a re-evaluation of classic models of extension Available to Purchase
Abstract The thermal evolution of continental rifted margins is key to understanding margin subsidence and hydrocarbon prospectivity. Observed heat-flow values, however, do not always comply with classic rifting models. Here, we use 2D numerical models to investigate the relationship between rifting, sedimentation and thermal history of margins. We find that during the synrift, the basement heat-flow and temperature are not only controlled by extension factor, but also by synrift sediment thickness and the evolution of deformation. As this progressively focuses oceanward, the proximal sectors thermally relax, while the distal sectors experience peak temperatures. In the post-rift, the lithosphere under the hyperextended margins does not return to its original state, at least for c. 100 Myr after break-up. Instead, it mimics that of the adjacent oceanic plate, which is thinner than the original continental plate. This results in heat-flow increasing oceanward at post-rift stages, when classic rifting theory predicts complete thermal relaxation. Our models also predict slightly increased heat-flows in the adjacent oceanic crust, potentially extending hydrocarbon plays into distal margins and oceanic crust, previously discarded as immature. Finally, our models indicate that commonly used temperature approximations to calculate heat-flow during rifting may strongly differ from those occurring in nature.

Abstract This study contributes to geothermal exploration in 1660–1520 Ma old, reworked bedrock in Sweden. Our primary objectives are to constrain the orientation of horizontal stresses, and to discuss implications for geothermal exploration. High-resolution acoustic televiewer image data reveal the downhole distribution of stress indicators (borehole breakouts, drilling-induced fractures and petal centreline fractures) and pre-existing structures (natural fractures, foliation). About 135 m of stress indicators are measured from 0.2–1.0 km. The results suggest a uniform NNW–SSE mean maximum horizontal stress orientation. A total of 1525 pre-existing structures (natural fractures, foliation) are mapped in borehole GE-1. The prevailing stress regime controls whether natural fractures and foliation are well-oriented for stimulation. For strike-slip and normal faulting stress regimes, well-oriented fractures steeply dip towards the WSW. For a reverse faulting stress regime, shallow dipping fractures are well-oriented for stimulation. The downhole distribution of stress indicators and other stress measurements in the region and other parts of Fennoscandia tentatively suggest a strike-slip stress regime, but additional studies are needed to constrain the complete stress field at study depth and towards engineered geothermal systems reservoir target depths. Our secondary objective is to highlight that interpretation of high-resolution acoustic data, particularly in metamorphic crystalline rocks, is subjective and that more guidelines for data interpretation are needed. The interactive interpretation of the images is based on visual analyses of complex pre-existing structures and stress indicators with highly variable shapes. The application of three methods for data analyses in the GE-1 borehole proposes that drilling-induced fractures are little influenced by the method applied. Interpretations on individual borehole breakout azimuths may, however, result in over 10° differences in orientation.
The 3D stress field of Nordland, northern Norway – insights from numerical modelling Available to Purchase
Abstract The Nordland area in northern Norway is the seismically most active area on mainland Fennoscandia. It exhibits patterns of coastal extension, which contrasts with the first-order regional stress pattern that reflects compression aligned with the North Atlantic ridge push. The regional stress field has been considered to emanate from the interaction of ridge push and glacial isostatic adjustment; while the local stress pattern can be additionally influenced by gravitational, topographic stresses, as well as the flexural effects of erosion and sediment deposition. We employ finite element numerical models at a crustal scale to study the 3D stress field, using existing geometric constraints from previous geophysical studies. Internal body forces, induced by variations in density, topography or Moho depth, already yield significant deviatoric stresses. In the models tested, these can strongly influence the near-surface stress regime, in particular for the continental margin setting we are investigating. In addition, redistribution of rock mass, which occurred mainly under Pleistocene glaciation, can modify the stress field significantly on a semi-regional scale. We consider this process to be the main driver for the coastal extension, in particular in areas where erosion has been high.

Rapid glacial sedimentation and overpressure in oozes causing large craters on the mid-Norwegian margin: integrated interpretation of the Naust, Kai and Brygge formations Available to Purchase
Abstract Along continental margins with rapid sedimentation, overpressure may build up in porous and compressible sediments. Large-scale release of such overpressure has major implications for fluid migration and slope stability. Here, we study if the widespread crater-mound-shaped structures in the subsurface along the mid-Norwegian continental margin are caused by overpressure that accumulated within high-compressibility oozes sealed by low-permeability glacial muds. We interpret 56 000 km 2 of 3D and 150 000 km 2 of 2D-cubed seismic data in the Norwegian Sea, combining horizon picking, well ties and seismic geomorphological analyses of the crater-mound landforms. Along the mid-Norwegian margin, the base of the glacially influenced sediments abruptly deepens to form 28 craters with typical depths of c. 100 m, areal extents of up to 5130 km 2 and volumes of up to 820 km 3 . Mounds are observed in the vicinity of the craters at several stratigraphic levels above the craters. We present a new model for the formation of the craters and mounds where the mounds consist of remobilized oozes evacuated from the craters. In our model, repeated and overpressure-driven sediment failure is interpreted to cause the crater-mound structures, as opposed to erosive megaslides. Seismic geomorphological analyses suggest that ooze remobilization occurred as an abrupt energetic and extrusive process. The results also suggest that rapidly deposited, low-permeability and low-porosity glacial sediments seal overpressure that originated from fluids being expelled from the underlying high-permeability and high-compressibility biosiliceous oozes.
