Abstract Although the Rheic Ocean was the widest to be closed during the assembly of Pangaea, its suture zone is dominated by a younger (Rhenohercynian) Wilson Cycle. The present paper briefly summarizes the Rhenohercynian and reviews the relicts of the Rheic. The absence of a Rheic orogen is mainly due to bipolar subduction of the Rheic Ocean, which created two magmatic arcs and largely destroyed the passive margin prisms, thus depriving the collision zone of building material. Also, displacement of Variscan zones in England, France and Germany along a curvature of the dextral Bristol/Bray/Bohemia shear zone has effected their anticlockwise rotation. Younger, ENE-trending reverse faults have truncated the NE-trending structural boundaries and excised pre-Devonian, Rheic-related rocks west of the River Rhine, while the northern Rheic Arc and Cambrian–Silurian deposits of the Rheic Ocean have been preserved further east. Opening of the Rhenohercynian successor ocean to the Rheic put a brake on plate convergence and hindered formation of a large collisional belt. Scarce relicts of the southern Rheic Arc and rocks with Silurian deformation exist in the (largely eroded) upper plate of the Rhenohercynian collisional belt, mostly in the form of clasts and detrital zircons in Upper Devonian/lower Carboniferous flysch and in tectonic mélange at the base of the allochthon.
The Harz Mountains (Germany) – Cadomia meets Avalonia and Baltica: U–Pb ages of detrital and magmatic zircon as a key for the decoding of Pangaea's central suture Open Access
Abstract U–Pb ages of detrital (n = 2391) and magmatic (n = 170) zircon grains from the Harz Mountains were obtained by LA-ICP-MS for provenance studies and absolute age dating. Results point to a complete closure of the Rheic Ocean at c. 419 Ma. A narrow Rhenish Seaway then re-opened in Emsian to mid-Devonian time (c. 390–400 Ma). Devonian sedimentary rocks of the Harz Mountains were deposited on the northwestern (Rheno-Hercynian) and on the southeastern (Saxo-Thuringian) margins of the Rhenish Seaway. A new U–Pb zircon age from a plagiogranite (329 ± 2 Ma) within a harzburgite makes the existence of oceanic lithosphere in the Rhenish Seaway probable. The Rhenish Seaway was completely closed by Serpukhovian time (c. 328 Ma). Existence of a terrane in the seaway is not supported by the new data. Provenance studies and spatial arrangement allow reconstruction of the thin- to thick-skinned obduction style of the Harz Mountains onto the southeastern margin of East Avalonia (Rheno-Hercynian Zone) during the Variscan orogeny. Detrital zircon populations define Rheno-Hercynian and Saxo-Thuringian nappes. Intrusion of the granitoid plutons of the Harz Mountains occurred in a time window of c. 300 to 295 Myr and constrained the termination of Variscan deformation.

Abstract In the Saxothuringian Zone, a unique assemblage of high- to ultra-high-pressure and ultra-high-temperature metamorphic units is associated with medium- to low-pressure and temperature rocks. The units were studied in a campaign with garnet and monazite petrochronology of gneisses, micaschists and phyllites, and monazite dating in granites. P–T path segments of garnet crystallization were reconstructed by geothermobarometry and interpreted in terms of the monazite stability field, EPMA Th–U–Pb monazite ages and garnet Y + HREE zonations. One can recognize (1) Cambrian plutonism (512–503 Ma) with contact metamorphism in the Münchberg Massif. Subordinate monazite populations may indicate a (2) widespread but weak Silurian (444–418 Ma) thermal event. A (3) Devonian (389–360 Ma) high-pressure metamorphism prevails in the Münchberg and Frankenberg massifs. In the ultra-high-pressure and high-pressure units of the Erzgebirge the predominant (4) Carboniferous (336–327 Ma) monazites crystallized at the decompression paths. In the Saxonian Granulite Massif, prograde–retrograde P–T paths of cordierite-garnet gneisses can be related to monazite ages from 339 to 317 Ma. A (5) local hydrothermal overprint at 313–302 Ma coincides partly with post-tectonic (345–307 Ma) granite intrusions. Such diverse monazite age pattern and P–T time paths characterize the tectono-metamorphic evolution of each crustal segment involved in the Variscan Orogeny.

The Ordovician of France and neighbouring areas of Belgium and Germany Available to Purchase
Abstract The Ordovician successions of France and neighbouring areas of Belgium and Germany are reviewed and correlated based on international chronostratigraphic and regional biostratigraphic charts. The same three megasequences related to the rift, drift and docking of Avalonia with Baltica can be tracked in Belgium and neighbouring areas (Brabant Massif and Ardenne inliers), western (Rhenish Massif) and northeastern Germany (Rügen). The remaining investigated areas were part of Gondwana in the Ordovician. The Armorican Massif shares with the Iberian Peninsula a Furongian–Early Ordovician gap (Toledanian or Norman gap), and a continuous Mid–Late Ordovician shelf sedimentation. The Occitan Domain (Montagne Noire and Mouthoumet massifs), eastern Pyrenees and northwestern Corsica share with southwestern Sardinia continuous shelf sedimentation in the Early Ordovician, and a Mid Ordovician ‘Sardic gap’. In the Ordovician, the Maures Massif probably belonged to the same Sardo-Occitan domain. The Vosges and Schwarzwald massifs display comparable, poorly preserved Ordovician successions, suggesting affinities with the Teplá-Barrandian and/or Moldanubian zones of Central Europe.
