Abstract The NE Atlantic volcanic rifted margins include vast underexplored basin areas neighbouring mature petroleum-producing regions. We appraise the cross-border prospectivity of the outer and central Faroe–Shetland, Møre and southern Vøring basins and present insights from extensive new 3D seismic surveys. Regional seismic surfaces are used to compile a cross-border seismic profile highlighting key discoveries from the UK Rosebank field in the SW to the Norwegian Ormen Lange field in the NE. Cretaceous to Paleocene reservoirs remain the main exploration focus seaward of the platform areas, and the presence of several large untested structures presents important exploration targets in the mid-Norway region. Improved imaging of the areas affected by Paleogene igneous rocks reveals major untested sub-basalt structures including some regions on the marginal highs where the basalt cover has been entirely removed by erosion, revealing sub-basalt stratigraphy and structures with pre-Cretaceous potential prospectivity. The influence of igneous rocks on both discovered and prospective hydrocarbon systems is discussed. Neogene sand injectite fields and Quaternary glacial sand bodies are extremely well imaged in the Møre Basin, documenting shallow prospectivity supported by the presence of successful regional analogue plays. New 3D seismic data are revealing previously unseen prospectivity in frontier and underexplored regions.

Abstract The Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) is characterized by pronounced global warming and associated environmental changes. In the more-or-less two decades since prior regional syntheses of Apectodinium distribution at the PETM, extensive biological and geochemical datasets have elucidated the effect of rising world temperatures on climate and the biome. A Carbon Isotope Excursion (CIE) that marks the Paleocene/Eocene Boundary is associated with an acme of marine dinocysts of the genus Apectodinium in many locations. Distinctive foraminiferal and calcareous nannofossil populations may also be present. For this updated, dinocyst-oriented view of the PETM, data from worldwide locations have been evaluated with an emphasis on stratigraphic and sedimentological context. What has emerged is that a change in lithology is common, often to a distinctive siltstone or claystone unit, which contrasts with underlying and overlying lithotypes. This change, present in shallow marine/coastal settings and in deep-water turbidite deposits, is attributed to radical modifications of precipitation and erosional processes. An abrupt boundary carries the implication that some time (of unknowable duration) is potentially missing, which then requires caution in the interpretation of the pacing of events in relation to that boundary. In most instances an ‘abrupt’ or ‘rapid’ CIE onset can be attributed to a data gap at a hiatus, particularly in shallow shelf settings where transgression resulted from sea-level rise associated with the PETM. Truly gradational lower boundaries of the PETM interval are quite unusual and, if present, are poorly known so far. Gradational upper boundaries are more common, but erosional upper boundaries have been reported. Taxonomic changes have been made to clarify identification issues that have adversely impacted some biostratigraphic interpretations. Apectodinium hyperacanthum has been retained in Wetzeliella , its original genus. The majority of specimens previously assigned to Apectodinium hyperacanthum or Wetzeliella ( Apectodinium ) hyperacanthum have been reassigned to an informal species, Apectodinium sp. 1. Dracodinium astra has been retained in its original genus as Wetzeliella astra and is emended.

Abstract Twenty magnetostratigraphic profiles from IODP (International Oceanic Drilling Project) sediment cores distributed on the Earth's surface allowed the scatter of virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) during Brunhes–Matuyama times to be examined. We identified two groups of recording sites which give different paths for the VGPs during a time interval of about 1.1 myr. Calculations of the VGP velocities and accelerations, as well as the corresponding azimuths, resulted in mean/median values like those observed for recent times. No significant differences were observed during the ‘stable’ and transitional fields. The acceleration azimuths show variations from north–south to east–west depending on the field state: normal/reversed or transitional. Despite the uncertainties in the magnetization of the sediments (overprints and/or low-resolution records), we demonstrate that the use of this database is valid for obtaining kinematic parameters of the geomagnetic field when analysed on a statistical basis.

Abstract A new reservoir quality model is proposed for the Late Cretaceous Springar Formation sandstones of the Vøring Basin. Instead of a depth-related compactional control on reservoir quality, distinct high- and low-permeability trends are observed. Fan sequences which sit on the high-permeability trend are characterized by coarse-grained facies with a low matrix clay content. These facies represent the highest energy sandy turbidite facies within the depositional system, and were deposited in channelized or proximal lobe settings. Fan sequences on the low-permeability trend are characterized by their finer grain size and the presence of detrital clay, which has been diagenetically altered to a highly microporous, illitic, pore-filling clay. These fan sequences are interpreted to have been deposited in proximal–distal lobe environments. Original depositional facies determines the sorting, grain size and detrital clay content, and is the fundamental control on reservoir quality, as the illitization of detrital clay is the main mechanism for reductions in permeability. Core-scale depositional facies were linked to seismic-scale fan elements in order to better predict porosity and permeability within each fan system, allowing calibrated risking and ranking of prospects within the Springar Formation play.
