THE SOCIETY, THE SAVANTS, AND THE SCIENTIST: A GLIMPSE AT THE SOCIÉTÉ GÉOLOGIQUE DE FRANCE THROUGH THE ACTIVITY OF THE FOUNDING MEMBER NÉRÉE BOUBÉE (1830-1860)
Abstract Although the Rheic Ocean was the widest to be closed during the assembly of Pangaea, its suture zone is dominated by a younger (Rhenohercynian) Wilson Cycle. The present paper briefly summarizes the Rhenohercynian and reviews the relicts of the Rheic. The absence of a Rheic orogen is mainly due to bipolar subduction of the Rheic Ocean, which created two magmatic arcs and largely destroyed the passive margin prisms, thus depriving the collision zone of building material. Also, displacement of Variscan zones in England, France and Germany along a curvature of the dextral Bristol/Bray/Bohemia shear zone has effected their anticlockwise rotation. Younger, ENE-trending reverse faults have truncated the NE-trending structural boundaries and excised pre-Devonian, Rheic-related rocks west of the River Rhine, while the northern Rheic Arc and Cambrian–Silurian deposits of the Rheic Ocean have been preserved further east. Opening of the Rhenohercynian successor ocean to the Rheic put a brake on plate convergence and hindered formation of a large collisional belt. Scarce relicts of the southern Rheic Arc and rocks with Silurian deformation exist in the (largely eroded) upper plate of the Rhenohercynian collisional belt, mostly in the form of clasts and detrital zircons in Upper Devonian/lower Carboniferous flysch and in tectonic mélange at the base of the allochthon.
Seismic Station Monitoring Using Deviation from the Gaussianity
U–Pb age constraints on the Carboniferous–Permian transition in continental basins of eastern equatorial Pangaea (France): implications for the depositional history and correlations across the late Variscan Belt
Abstract In order to fulfil its mission, the Belgian Regulatory Body (constituted in Belgium by FANC and Bel V) has set up its own Research & Development programme, independent from the Waste Management Organisation's one. The Regulatory Body's Research & Development programme is mostly intended to investigate safety issues with the objective to be able to assess if the safety concept developed by the Waste Management Organisation fulfils the defined safety requirements. It includes the development and the follow-up of in situ experiments in underground research laboratories (e.g. in the Mont Terri project in Switzerland and at Tournemire in France). Such activities are essential to maintain and improve the scientific and technical skills, to strengthen the independence from the Waste Management Organisation and to build public confidence in the regulatory function. More generally, Research & Development in underground research laboratories is important to the Regulatory Body as it allows investigating processes, technologies and activities important to safety under in situ conditions. In particular, it is essential to accurately identify and characterize the processes upon which the safety functions of a disposal system rely, as well as processes that may affect the system performance. It is also necessary to demonstrate that construction and operational methods and technologies are technically feasible and can be implemented as assumed in the safety case. Such research and development activities are of great importance to properly manage some of the key uncertainties associated with a disposal programme and in particular to identify, characterize and reduce them where needed.
Abstract For the west European regional chronostratigraphic framework, the Cantabrian substage was conceived as covering a widely apparent stratigraphic gap between the top of the Westphalian and the base of Stephanian A, the lowest unit of the Stephanian. A continuous depositional history covers this time gap in the Cantabrian region of Spain; the upper limit of this interval was defined by the succeeding Barruelian substage, equivalent to Stephanian A. Intense tectonic and magmatic activity characterizes this period; the Iberian orogenic belt was an essentially linear feature buckled through the Late Pennsylvanian into the tightly folded Cantabrian Orocline. This evidences an extensive southern foreland to the Variscides, in which the coal-swamp biome persisted through the Late Pennsylvanian, supporting biostratigraphical correlation with the Donbass. New high precision U–Pb CA-ID-TIMS radiometric dating of tonstein horizons supports a preliminary time-framework of regional substages: base of the Asturian (proposed, ex-Westphalian D) c. 310.7 Ma; base of the Cantabrian c. 307.5 Ma; base of the Barruelian (ex-Stephanian A) c. 304.9 Ma; base of the Saberian (proposed) c. 303.5 Ma. The Cantabrian and Barruelian embrace the entire Kasimovian of the global time-scale, and the top of the Barruelian is essentially coincident with the base of the Gzhelian.
Abstract In Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor, the remains of Pennsylvanian sedimentary basins bearing continental deposits either intimately mixed with shallow-marine strata or deposited in exclusively continental settings are preserved. Long-lasting research on these basins allowed the definition of regional stages and substages based on marine fauna and terrestrial flora, later extended by terrestrial and freshwater faunal biostratigraphies. Glacioeustatically driven marine bands provide laterally widespread correlation markers; however, where such bands are missing only biostratigraphic control exists. Resolution of biostratigraphic zonations combined with gaps in sedimentary successions and variable quality of the fossil record throughout the basin fills do not allow in all cases a precise correlation between the Pennsylvanian basins in Europe and, in turn, the timing of tectonic, climatic and biotic events, and thus an absolute complete understanding of the response of terrestrial and freshwater biota to climate changes across eastern tropical Pangaea. A helpful tool is new radioisotopic ages of intercalated volcaniclastics that reveal the partial diachroneity of some widely used biostratigraphies. We attempt to present the current state of the art to stimulate further research to mitigate gaps in our knowledge.
