Abstract Neck and chute cutoffs along meandering rivers are near-instantaneous morphodynamic perturbations that drive modification of planform channel geometry and kinematics at the cutoff site and in adjacent bends. Despite their ubiquity, quantitative and predictive linkages between post-cutoff planform bend geometry and subsequent bend kinematics remain limited. Here, using a 37-year record of Landsat-derived river channel centrelines from a meandering reach of the Trinity River in Texas (USA) and a newly developed directed graph-based approach for high-resolution channel tracking, we identify a linkage between post-cutoff bend curvature and the magnitude, spatial extent, and temporal duration of cutoff influence on local and non-local channel bend kinematics. We further explore this relationship using a kinematic model of meandering applied to synthetically generated river reaches and the Landsat-derived Trinity River centrelines. While the model captures the observed linkages between post-cutoff bend curvature and resultant bend kinematics, it underpredicts the magnitude of cutoff influence observed in the real centreline data – particularly at the cutoff site – by up to one order of magnitude. Our results provide a promising advance in the characterization and prediction of the spatiotemporal impact of cutoffs on local and non-local post-cutoff channel bend kinematics.

Our seismic data are a kind of digital palimpsest: a manuscript written on imperfectly erased reused paper that contains multiple overlapping layers of writing. Each layer of writing has its own story; it may be fresh and distinct, easy to read, or broken up into fragments and faded into near invisibility. In our processing we typically pay the most attention to the data layer that we plan to use for imaging, and ignore the others to the extent that we can get away with doing so. The deeper layers become “noise”. However, the better we can understand the various layers of the data, the better we can turn each layer into either additional useful signal or structured (i.e. predictable) noise. Preserving the structure of the noise is important. It allows us to do better, possibly much better, than we could by treating it as Gaussian random noise. For random noise the best we can typically do is stacking. While stacking is a powerful tool, its noise-suppression abilities are effective only up to a point. Each incremental increase in the stack size N costs the same to acquire, yet results in ever less S/N improvement. Even worse, noise in real data often contains statistical outliers that will dominate over the noise-suppression power of stack as N becomes large. We can damage our data at every step of the process from acquisition to final delivered product. If you are not checking for problems, you may be unaware that anything is amiss. The next game-changing improvement in our ability to guide business decisions by producing higher-quality Earth images may only happen if we can treat our seismic data with greater scientific rigor than has been standard practice. The goal of this book is to teach you the skills that you will need to do that.

Abstract Shale reservoirs host ubiquitous multi-scale natural fractures created by factors such as pore pressure build-up after petroleum generation and palaeo crustal stress changes during tectonic episodes. Natural fractures are among postulated drivers of stimulated shale well productivity and related variability. Quantifying the aforementioned role and optimizing recovery call for litho-structural assessments. In this interdisciplinary study, natural fracture density (fractures per unit length) for North and South American shales (Marcellus, Eagle Ford, Haynesville, Barnett, Fayetteville and Vaca Muerta) was estimated from published observations of outcrops, cores and borehole images. Associated production for the latest horizontal wells, drilled in the most productive locations (sweet spots), was normalized by lateral length and reservoir thickness. It was found to correlate positively with the density of small-scale natural fractures. Durations of transient linear flow, diagnosed from production data, were play-specific, negatively correlated with small-scale natural fracture density and led to realization of picodarcy matrix permeability. Conversely, large-scale (tectonic) fractures limit stimulation efficiency and pose environmental/induced seismicity risks. Therefore, stimulation-driven reactivation of small-scale fractures facilitates drainage and enhances well productivity. Relatedly, reservoir flow regimes and production decline curves are intricately controlled by interplay of natural fracture density and matrix permeability. Variability of these parameters calls for acreage-tailored stimulations.

Abstract The Town Creek locale in Jackson, Mississippi exposes fossiliferous strata through stream erosion and provides evidence for stratal doming atop an extinct volcano. Charles Lyell (1797–1875) investigated the locale on his second visit to North America (1845–46) and concluded that Town Creek fossils were older than Vicksburg fossils, and that strata dipped westward from Jackson. In the 1850s, Mississippi's state geologist Eugene Hilgard (1833–1916) recognized the first volcanic doming evidence and correctly concluded that a ‘local upheaval’ had elevated the Jackson area. Subsequent research revealed an extinct volcano as Jackson Dome's source, explaining the strata dip and Lyell's observation that Jackson's Eocene fossils were older than Vicksburg fossils, later identified as Oligocene. The Jackson fossiliferous strata, known today as the Moodys Branch Formation, exquisitely preserves fossils that have contributed to numerous scientific investigations. The Town Creek locale was threatened in 2003 when a proposed flood control project would have inundated it. Scientists rallied for the preservation of the geologically and historically important Town Creek, and today it remains as a geoheritage site available to scientists and the public, with a state historical marker noting its geological importance. Long-term preservation of the locale is needed but not guaranteed.

Abstract The Chandeleur Submarine Landslide Complex occurs on the upper Mississippi Fan of the Gulf of Mexico in approximately 1100 m of water, 200 km SE of New Orleans, Louisiana. This part of the Mississippi Fan received high sedimentation throughout the Pleistocene, causing high pore fluid pressure and abundant slope failures, though few as large as the Chandeleur. Given its large size, proximity to major coastal cities and seafloor infrastructures, we examine the Chandeleur Slide to understand what led to the initial slope failure and decipher its post-failure transport behaviour using 2D and 3D multichannel seismic surveys, high-resolution bathymetric data, and well logs. We find a large sediment mass with a translational-rotational behaviour that was displaced to the south/SE up to 40 km from the source area. The Chandeleur Slide includes extensional faulting in the headscarp area and compressional structures in the toe where confined by a natural ramp-like structure. Beneath the Chandeleur Slide, we identify a regional sand-rich unit (called the Blue Unit) that is known to be overpressured. Beneath the Blue Unit we observe an upward-migrating salt diapir. We suggest one possible scenario for the origin of the Chandeleur Slide is the combined effects of an upward-migrating salt diapir impinging on an already overpressured Blue Unit, leading to the initial failure. The initial failure was followed by retrogressive headwall retreat northward, which created the prominent scarp on the seafloor. In total, the Chandeleur Slide complex covers an area of about 1000 km 2 and contains about 300 km 3 of sediment.
