BRACHIOPOD SHELL DISCOLORATION AS AN INDICATOR OF TAPHONOMIC ALTERATION IN THE DEEP-TIME FOSSIL RECORD
Niche conservatism along an onshore-offshore gradient
The chemostratigraphic (δ 13 C carb ) record of the Lexington Limestone in central Kentucky is a high-resolution record in Chatfieldian and lower Edenian strata. Parts of the Lexington Limestone in this region reflect an anomalous structurally controlled carbonate buildup with complex facies relationships. Chemostratigraphic analysis of buildup and off-buildup composite sections, which exemplify the Lexington facies mosaic, reveals an overall decreasing trend in 13 C compositions throughout the formation and into the overlying Clays Ferry Formation. Superimposed on this trend are four locally correlative excursions. The most significant excursion is found within the Logana Member. The Guttenberg excursion is locally expressed as two prominent δ 13 C peaks (maxima +2.58‰). The excursion is important because of its stratigraphic position above the regional and globally correlated Millbrig K-bentonite, which allows for correlation with chronostratigraphically equivalent successions. The ubiquity of the Guttenberg excursion has been recognized throughout the eastern and central United States and the Baltic region. Additional excursions have been detected and are common in other sections, showing that the chemostratigraphic record of the Lexington Limestone is similar in buildup and off-buildup sections, even across complex lithofacies boundaries. The similarity of the record across complex facies, moreover, suggests that these localized excursions are “events,” which can be used to constrain correlations and augment known facies relationships. Furthermore, the overall chemostratigraphic trend in the Lexington Limestone appears similar to published δ 13 C values from equivalent strata in Baltoscandia, emphasizing the global correlative value of chemostratigraphic trends in Upper Ordovician strata.
BIOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF UNIQUELY PRESERVED HOEGKLINTIA (ACRITARCHA) FROM THE LOWER SILURIAN, MID-CONTINENT, UNITED STATES
Silurian high-resolution stratigraphy on the Cincinnati Arch: Progress on recalibrating the layer-cake
Abstract The Silurian rocks of the Cincinnati Arch in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana have been studied for nearly two centuries. Compilation of data from these studies, combined with detailed analysis of nearly 20 continuous drill cores and remeasuring and resampling of more than 60 major outcrops, is the basis for a high-resolution sequence stratigraphic framework. Seven depositional sequences are assigned on the basis of through-going unconformities, which mirror those already recognized in the early Llandovery to early Ludlow of the northern Appalachian Basin. Revision of the conodont biostratigraphy for the Cincinnati Arch has produced results that both agree and disagree with the other lines of data implemented in the sequence stratigraphic depositional model. Biostratigraphic correlations between southern Ohio and the Niagara Falls area are largely in agreement with correlations based on other lines of data, as are correlations between west-central and western Ohio, southeastern Indiana, and northern Kentucky. However, correlations between southern and west-central Ohio show major areas of disagreement. Preliminary whole rock carbonate carbon isotope analyses in western-central Ohio show patterns roughly comparable to those documented in the Niagara region, Gotland, and elsewhere. Chemostratigraphic data that might resolve inconsistencies in the correlations between southern and west-central Ohio were not yet available at the time of publication.
