Chickies Rock, a striking promontory on the Susquehanna River: the early Cambrian type locality of the trace fossil Skolithos and a model site for structural analysis Open Access
Abstract Chickies Rock rises abruptly from the east bank of the Susquehanna River at Columbia, Pennsylvania, where it breaks through a ridge held up by massively bedded quartzite. Here in the 1830s, Samuel Haldeman recognized long straight tubes that he later described as Skolithos linearis , penetrating the quartzite. Uncertain about the nature of these cylindrical ‘vermiform or linear’, unbranched ‘stems’, Haldeman first treated them as a subgenus of Fucoides , to which root-like traces were then often assigned. By the time James Hall first illustrated the species in 1847, Haldeman was sure they were burrows of a worm-like animal, as the name he had chosen implied. Since 1960, Donald Wise has developed a detailed analysis of structural deformation of the Chickies Anticline, using the Skolithos burrows as ‘plumb-bobs’ against which Taconic rotation of the rock fabric can be measured. Wise showed that later Alleghanian deformation produced prominent folds with external rotation up to twice as great as that of the rock fabric itself. Now conserved as a county park, Chickies Rock attracts many visitors. Its cliff-top is a superb viewpoint from which to contemplate progressive westward migration of the Appalachian drainage divide, ongoing since the late Jurassic opening of the Atlantic Ocean.
Supercontinents, orogenesis and magmatism: a tribute to the career of J. Brendan Murphy Free
Abstract Special Publication 542 is a tribute to the remarkable career of J. Brendan Murphy and features 32 articles by 134 authors from 17 different countries; a testament to the high-profile and far-reaching influence of Brendan's work. The topics are wide-ranging in accord with Brendan's diverse research interests, but fall into three broad categories that encompass Brendan's main fields of influence: (i) supercontinents and the supercontinent cycle, including reconstructions and modelling, (ii) orogenesis and terranes, with a focus on the Appalachian–Variscan and Central Asian orogenic belts and the oceans with which they are associated and (iii) magmatism and magmatic processes, with an emphasis on the geochemistry and isotopic compositions of magmas in arc and rift settings. Like Brendan's own research, the scope of the papers spans the globe from Canada to China and ranges from regional field-based studies to conceptual global analyses. All of the articles, however, are focused on unravelling some critical aspect of geology or aimed at clarifying some crucial geologic process. Hence they also share a theme common to Brendan's many contributions in emphasizing the importance of process-oriented research.
Colliding cratons: linking the Variscan Orogeny in West Africa and North America Available to Purchase
Abstract The Variscan Orogen was formed during the closure of the Rheic Ocean and the final collision between the North American and West African cratons in the Late Paleozoic. This collision led to the multistage building of the Mauritanide Belt to the east of the Variscan suture and to the building of the well-known Appalachian Belt to the west. Both led to opposite vergences in this part of the Variscan belt. The earliest records of the main collision episode begin at ∼360 Ma and end about 250 myr ago, while a late extensional phase lasted until ∼190 Ma. Three distinct stages are recognized in West Africa. The first stage (c. 350–300 Ma) records the indentation of the Reguibat Shield into the central Appalachian margin of Laurentia. This indentation led to thrusting of the Souttoufide and Akjoujt ‘nappes’ onto the Reguibat Shield, to southward motion of the Senegalese block (SB), and to strike-slip motion in the Appalachians. The motion of the SB to the south is coeval with: (1) folding of the northern part of the Bové Basin, (2) north–south sinistral strike-slip motions in the central Mauritanides, and (3) the end of sedimentation in the Bové and Taoudeni Basins by the Late Devonian. The second stage (c. 300–250 Ma) involves the eastward motion of the Western Thrust Block (WTB) against the SB and, likely, some of the westward thrusts in the Appalachians. This second ‘Variscan’ event includes: (1) closure of parts of the lower Diourbel Carboniferous basin, which is now concealed beneath the Senegalo-Mauritanian Basin, (2) thrusting to the east of the Simenti Group over the Koulountou Group in the Bassaride Belt, (3) thrusting to the east of the Wa-Wa Group, (4) thrusting of the Mauritanide Belt onto the Taoudeni Basin in the central Mauritanide Belt, and finally (5) thrusting of the Agualilet Group over the Akjoujt nappes and eastward motion of the western units over the Dhloat Ensour (Late Ordovician to early Devonian) autochthonous unit in the Souttoufides. West of the supposed ‘Variscan’ suture, Appalachian thrusting affected parts of Appalachian Belt. The third stage (c. 250 to 190 Ma) began with the opening of Triassic rift basins in the Senegalo-Mauritanian basin and also in the north of Florida. As numerous previous correlations across the Variscan system do not include the West African part, our sythesis is intended to enhance these correlations.

The chapters in this Memoir provide syntheses of current understanding of the geologic evolution of Laurentia and North America, as well as new hypotheses for testing.

ABSTRACT The North American continent has a rich geologic record that preserves evidence for tectonic processes throughout much of Earth’s history. Within this long history, however, particular times—e.g., “turning points”—have had specific and lasting impact on the evolution of Laurentia (ancestral North America). This volume is focused on seven of these “turning points”: (1) The Neoarchean (2.7–2.5 Ga), characterized by cratonization and the Kenoran orogen(s); (2) the Paleoproterozoic (1.9–1.7 Ga) and the initial assembly of Laurentia; (3) the Mesoproterozoic (1.5–1.4 Ga) Andean-style margin on the southern edge of Laurentia with the Pinware-Baraboo-Picuris orogeny; (4) the 1.2–1.0 Ga Midcontinent rift, and the Grenville orogeny and assembly of Rodinia; (5) the 700–500 Ma Neoproterozoic breakup of Rodinia; (6) the mid-Paleozoic (420–340 Ma) closure of the Iapetus and Rheic oceans and the development of the Appalachian-Caledonian orogen; and (7) the Jurassic–Paleogene (200–50 Ma) assembly of the North American Cordilleran margin by terrane accretion and subduction. The assembled chapters provide syntheses of current understanding of the geologic evolution of Laurentia and North America, as well as new hypotheses for testing. The inclusion of work from different geological time periods within a single volume provides continent-wide perspectives on the evolution of tectonic events and processes that acted on and within Laurentia.
An eolian dust origin for clastic fines of Devono-Mississippian mudrocks of the greater North American midcontinent Open Access
No evidence of multiple impact scenario across the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary based on planktic foraminiferal biochronology Open Access
ABSTRACT Large bolide impacts seem to have strongly affected biological evolution, causing detrimental effects on the biosphere. The best-known case is the Chicxulub impact (Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico), the most probable trigger of the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary (KPB) mass extinction. Nevertheless, after four decades of intensive research, a consensus on the causal relationship between the impact and the mass extinction has not yet been reached. Most of the scientific community has established multiple, strong arguments for the Chicxulub impact as the most likely and principal cause of the KPB mass extinction. However, a variety of hypotheses link the mass extinction mainly to the volcanism of the Deccan Traps and one or more bolide impact events within a relatively short time through the KPB: one impact in the late Maastrichtian (66.3 Ma), corresponding to the Chicxulub impact, a larger one at the KPB (66 Ma), and a final one in the early Danian (65.9 Ma). Here, we report on the controversies relating to the correlation of the Chicxulub impact event with the mass extinction, with a focus on the stratigraphy and biostratigraphy of sections in Mexico, Cuba, and Haiti, which include ejecta-rich clastic deposits linked to the Chicxulub impact. High-resolution biostratigraphy and quantitative data with planktic foraminifera reveal that these deposits are synchronous with the ejecta-rich airfall layer and the KPB mass extinction horizon of the El Kef, Tunisia, stratotype. Our results provide no support for a multiple impact scenario but confirm that the Chicxulub impact event is indeed the KPB impact event. Furthermore, we have not found any biostratigraphic evidence to support an additional Danian impact event near the Gulf of Mexico region.
