Trackways in the New Red Sandstone of the Connecticut River Valley, USA, the cradle of ichnology Available to Purchase
Abstract Fossil trackways in the Jura-Triassic rift basin of the Connecticut River Valley are important to geoheritage for their quality, preservation, and role in the history of geology, especially of ichnology. Discovered in the early 1800s, these trackways of small to large, bipedal, three-toed animals came to the attention of Edward Hitchcock, a prolific geologist and natural theologian. His first publication on the subject was in January 1836 and, in the same year, William Buckland included parts of the report, with illustrations, in his Bridgewater Treatise. Hitchcock and Buckland are credited with establishing the field of ichnology, the study of track and trails. Within the first decade, other traces documented include four-footed tracks, fish fossils, invertebrate burrows, plant impressions, ripple marks and raindrop impressions; few bones have ever been discovered in the valley. Early fossil-track collectors included Hitchcock, James Deane, Dexter Marsh and Roswell Field. Specimens quickly made their way to Europe, and publications brought the tracks to international attention, in both science and literature. In nineteenth-century discussions, the three-toed trackway makers – birds or dinosaurs? – were particular subjects of interest and debate. These fossil trackways remain well known and studied today, with several preserved field sites and museum collections.
Evolution of layering in a migmatite sample: Implications for the petrogenesis of multidomain monazite and zircon Available to Purchase
Terminal Ediacaran–Late Ordovician evolution of the NE Laurentia palaeocontinent: rift–drift–onset of Taconic Orogeny, sea-level change and ‘Hawke Bay’ onlap (not offlap) Available to Purchase
Abstract Rodinia break-up with late Ediacaran rifting defined a NE Laurentia triple junction (New York Promontory–Ottawa–Bonnechere aulacogen (OBA)–Quebec Reentrant). Rifting persisted to c. 510 Ma. The oldest passive-margin shelf units (Forestdale Marble and Moosalamoo Phyllite) underlie a sandstone (Cheshire) commonly regarded as the oldest passive unit. Late Dyeran–Middle Cambrian rifting led to the oldest OBa sedimentation and formed the Franklin Basin (NW Vermont). Cambrian–Darriwillian shelf–slope facies are linked eustatically – not Taconic Orogeny onset. Onlap and shelf carbonates are coeval with black slope mud; and lowstand shelf unconformities with green, oxic slope mud. Early–middle Dyeran eustatic change defined slope units: (1) Browns Pond Formation dysoxic–anoxic (d–a) interval with debrite cap (Holcombville Member, new); (2) Middle Granville Formation Oxic Interval (new); and (3) lower Hatch Hill Formation d–a interval. Our analysis leads to two controversial conclusions: (i) the existence of the Dashwoods and other micro-continental blocks due to hyperextension is not supported by cover sequences linking Laurentia to proposed Dashwoods areas (i.e. Green Mountains) and an arc origin of the type Dashwoods; and (ii) ‘Hawke Bay Event(s)’, widely interpreted as Cambrian global regressive event(s), is a local highstand systems tract facies with shelf sand bypass onto the Hatch Hill Formation slope in its NE Laurentia type region.

Superimposed brittle structures in polyorogenic contexts: Variscan and Alpine faults in the Duje Valley (Picos de Europa, Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain) Available to Purchase
Abstract Detailed geological mapping of a highly fractured Paleozoic (pre-Permian) basement and the scarce outcrops of overlying Permian–Mesozoic cover in the surroundings of the Duje Valley (Picos de Europa Unit, Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain), together with new field data, have allowed the separation of four genetic fault sets in a polyorogenic area, affected by the Variscan and Alpine cycles. These fault sets are, from oldest to youngest: Variscan thrusts (late Carboniferous), late Variscan strike-slip faults (late Carboniferous–earliest Permian), Alpine normal faults (Permian–Mesozoic) and Alpine reverse faults (Cenozoic). A structural analysis is reported here, based on the joint use of geometric, kinematic and deformational features, cross-cutting and tectono – sedimentary relationships between the structures. This analysis has allowed the recognition and full characterization of the four fault sets. These types of structural analyses are useful for unravelling complex tectonic histories in regions where massive limestone lithologies make reconstructing the timing of fault activity difficult, especially if the basement is affected by late deformation events that are not recorded by cover outcrops.

The challenge of relating the Kasimovian to west European chronostratigraphy: a critical review of the Cantabrian and Barruelian substages of the Stephanian Stage Open Access
Abstract For the west European regional chronostratigraphic framework, the Cantabrian substage was conceived as covering a widely apparent stratigraphic gap between the top of the Westphalian and the base of Stephanian A, the lowest unit of the Stephanian. A continuous depositional history covers this time gap in the Cantabrian region of Spain; the upper limit of this interval was defined by the succeeding Barruelian substage, equivalent to Stephanian A. Intense tectonic and magmatic activity characterizes this period; the Iberian orogenic belt was an essentially linear feature buckled through the Late Pennsylvanian into the tightly folded Cantabrian Orocline. This evidences an extensive southern foreland to the Variscides, in which the coal-swamp biome persisted through the Late Pennsylvanian, supporting biostratigraphical correlation with the Donbass. New high precision U–Pb CA-ID-TIMS radiometric dating of tonstein horizons supports a preliminary time-framework of regional substages: base of the Asturian (proposed, ex-Westphalian D) c. 310.7 Ma; base of the Cantabrian c. 307.5 Ma; base of the Barruelian (ex-Stephanian A) c. 304.9 Ma; base of the Saberian (proposed) c. 303.5 Ma. The Cantabrian and Barruelian embrace the entire Kasimovian of the global time-scale, and the top of the Barruelian is essentially coincident with the base of the Gzhelian.

ABSTRACT The Appalachian Mountains in northern Vermont host a complex rock record of the tectonic evolution of eastern Laurentia, from the opening of the Iapetus Ocean to the subsequent formation of a convergent Paleozoic margin involving multiple phases of orogenesis. Prior 40 Ar/ 39 Ar studies in Vermont and northern Massachusetts have generally interpreted two major events associated with a dominantly Ordovician Taconic orogeny and a Devonian Acadian orogeny; intermediate ages were considered to reflect Taconic metamorphism and/or deformation that was “partially reset” during the Acadian orogeny. However, recent studies have documented Salinic ages in northern Vermont, aligning with multiple lines of evidence in southern Quebec for an intervening Salinic orogeny during the Silurian. This study reports integrated microstructural and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar geochronological analyses of samples collected across the Green Mountain anticlinorium in northern Vermont. The dominant S 2 and S 3 foliations are defined in thin section by predominantly white mica/quartz microlithons and aligned mica cleavage domains in schist to graphitic schist that formed under greenschist-facies conditions. Correlation of microstructures across the field area and associated 40 Ar/ 39 Ar plateau ages reveal a spatial pattern associated with microstructural development across the anticlinorium. In the eastern limb, the oldest plateau age, 457.6 ± 2.0 Ma (1σ), is interpreted to reflect the timing of formation of S 2 . The youngest plateau age, 419.0 ± 2.4 Ma, comes from the western limb of the anticline near the trace of the Honey Hollow fault, where S 2 is completely transposed by S 3 . Intermediate ages were obtained across the axis of the anticline, where S 3 is a crenulation cleavage. While the Green Mountain anticlinorium has been previously interpreted to have formed in the Devonian during the Acadian orogeny, the typical ca. 386–355 Ma ages are notably absent in the data set, except in locally disturbed spectra. The results of this work are closely aligned with published results of 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dating in southern Quebec that reflect deformation during Taconic and Salinic orogenesis. These new data, together with recently reported ages of west-directed transport on Taconic thrusts along the western Green Mountain front at ca. 420 Ma, suggest a phase of mountain building in the New England Appalachians that has been previously unreported in Vermont. The formation of the Green Mountain anticlinorium coincided with a complex tectonic interval that overlapped temporally with (1) the transition from Salinic thrusting to normal faulting, (2) magmatism attributed to slab breakoff, and (3) syntectonic deposition in the Connecticut Valley–Gaspé Basin.
