Geochronology, geochemistry, and tectonic setting of Ordovician metavolcanic rocks in the Liberty–Orrington belt, Maine: implications for the evolution of peri-Gondwanan arcs in the northern Appalachians
Abstract This paper synthesizes the geology of the Atlantic Margin off the coast of Iberia and surrounding Abyssal Plains using published thematic mapping freely downloadable from EMODNET-Geology portal at different scales. Selected information was chosen in order to highlight mineral occurrences and natural hazards overlaid on geological and morphological maps. Altogether, this information is published and interpreted here for the first time; nevertheless this exercise can be carried out by anyone interested and allows different visualizations of geological objects. Cross-correlations of geological objects and processes can easily arise. Because all of the information (each piece of data and metadata) in the EMODNET-Geology portal has bibliographic references associated, readers are able to find the original source of information. It is shown that clicking in and out of layers of information (that cannot be found all together in a single scientific paper) allows quick cross-correlation using the EMODNET Geology thematic portal. This allows a free, versatile and quick way of cross-correlating geological objects and processes in vast marine areas and their comparison with onshore geology.

Assessment of the effect of mass-transport deposits on fault propagation in Penobscot area, offshore Nova Scotia
Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) seismic data and well logs from the Penobscot area, located within the Scotian Basin offshore Nova Scotia, are used to assess the role of mass-transport deposits (MTDs) on fault propagation. Four MTDs characterized by chaotic seismic facies were mapped, with the earliest hosted by the Late Cretaceous–Recent Dawson Canyon Formation and latest three hosted by the Banquereau Formation. Two types of faults were also mapped. R-faults are regional faults that cut across all the interpreted MTDs in the study area, while P-faults are polygonal faults that cut across MTDs 2 and 3 but tip out at the basal surfaces of MTDs 4 and 2. Representative seismic profiles and isochron maps of the MTDs and throw–depth ( T–z ) and throw–distance ( T–x ) plots allows us to distinguish the families and propagation history of the faults. Our results show that fault propagation is not affected by the presence or thickness variation of MTDs, and is also unaffected by lithological contrast in the Penobscot area of the Nova Scotian Shelf.

The evolutionary significance of a Lower Cambrian trace-fossil assemblage from the Meguma terrane, Nova Scotia
Meguma, the most outboard northern Appalachian terrane, is characterized by Upper Neoproterozoic to Lower Ordovician turbiditic rocks that have an exposed thickness of more than 11 km. As a result of geological mapping, combined with petrological studies, the stratigraphy of these rocks has been redefined. The traditional twofold division into the meta-sandstone–dominated Goldenville Group and the overlying slate-dominated Halifax Group is retained, but the Chebogue Point shear zone divides these groups into western and southern stratigraphic packages containing different formations. In both packages, psammitic rocks are dominantly feldspathic wacke, and they have mineralogical compositions indicative of deposition in an active margin from a source dominated by quartz and plagioclase; rare conglomeratic units contain mainly psammitic clasts with some mafic through felsic volcanic clasts, and rare tonalite clasts. In the southern area, psammitic units tend to contain more quartz and grade to arenite. Although fine material increases in relative abundance, little change in provenance up section is indicated by petrography of psammitic rocks. Chemical compositions of 116 psammitic and pelitic samples from the western area and 471 from the larger southern area are consistent with the petrographic data. Their compositions are indicative of derivation from felsic to intermediate igneous material, and the depositional environment was probably in a rift along the Gond wanan margin. It is likely that Pan-African orogenic belts containing recycled sediments from older cratons were major contributors to the sediments, rather than sediments being derived directly from large ancient cratonic areas.
