Vegetational change during the Middle–Late Pennsylvanian transition in western Pangaea Available to Purchase
Abstract We present the first analysis of vegetational change in far western equatorial Pangaea (New Mexico, USA) during the Middle–Late Pennsylvanian transition (determined by conodonts and fusulinids) of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age. The study is based on the largest database assembled from this region: 28 of 44 quantitatively analysed floras from 14 of 26 stratigraphic levels. Most sampled floras are ‘mixed’, both below and above the boundary, including both hygromorphic and mesomorphic/xeromorphic taxa. The taxonomic data were recalibrated morphometrically focusing on foliar traits of lamina width and venation. All data were examined using stratigraphic credible intervals, capture–mark–recapture analyses, and resampling analyses. Results indicate no substantive taxonomic turnover across the boundary. This stands in marked contrast to patterns in mid-Pangaean coal basins where there is a large wetland vegetational turnover. However, plant and physical geological data indicate that immediately following the boundary in New Mexico, and for approximately half of the Missourian Stage, floras previously dominated by hygromorphs become overwhelmingly dominated by mesomorphic/xeromorphic taxa. Although expressed differently, the western Pangaean physical and palaeobotanical patterns parallel those from mid-Pangaean coal basins and suggest a widespread environmental change.

Tectonomagmatic evolution of southwestern Laurentia: Insights from zircon U-Pb geochronology and hafnium isotopic composition of the Red Bluff Granite Suite, west Texas, USA Open Access
Linking the Pinware, Baraboo, and Picuris orogens: Recognition of a trans-Laurentian ca. 1520–1340 Ma orogenic belt Open Access
ABSTRACT It is proposed that the Pinware orogen of eastern Canada, the Baraboo orogen of the midcontinent, and the Picuris orogen of the southwestern United States delineate a previously unrecognized, ~5000-km-long, ca. 1520–1340 Ma trans-Laurentian orogenic belt. All three orogenic provinces are characterized by Mesoproterozoic sedimentation, magmatism, metamorphism, and deformation—the hallmarks of a tectonically active plate margin. Tectonism was diachronous, with the earliest stages beginning ca. 1520 Ma in eastern Canada and ca. 1500 Ma in the southwest United States. Magmatic zircon age distributions are dominated by Mesoproterozoic, unimodal to multimodal age peaks between ca. 1500 and 1340 Ma. The onset of magmatism in the Pinware and Baraboo orogens was ca. 1520 Ma, and onset for the Picuris orogen was ca. 1485 Ma. Detrital zircon age distributions within each orogenic province yield maximum depositional ages between ca. 1570 and 1450 Ma. Minimum depositional ages generally fall between ca. 1500 and 1435 Ma, as constrained by crosscutting intrusions, metatuff layers, or the age of subsequent metamorphism. Metamorphic mineral growth ages from zircon, garnet, and monazite yield peak ages between ca. 1500 and 1350 Ma and tend to be older in the Pinware and Baraboo orogens than in the Picuris orogen. The 40 Ar/ 39 Ar cooling ages for hornblende, muscovite, and biotite yield significant peak ages between ca. 1500 and 1350 Ma in the Baraboo and Picuris orogens. We propose that the Pinware-Baraboo-Picuris orogen formed in a complex, diachronous, convergent margin setting along the southern edge of Laurentia from ca. 1520 to 1340 Ma.

A Synthesis of Late Paleozoic Sedimentation in Central and Eastern New Mexico: Implications for Timing of Ancestral Rocky Mountains Deformation Available to Purchase
The Ancestral Rocky Mountains (ARM) represent an intraplate deformational event that resulted in a series of Precambrian-cored basement uplifts with adjacent basins that accumulated Pennsylvanian to early Permian strata. Tectonic models for the event are debated largely because of the lack of robust age control in the basin fill. In New Mexico, the ARM event resulted in a series of basins with some of the best biostratigraphic records across the orogenic province. This article utilizes published biostratigraphic and lithostratigraphic data to (1) reconcile the onset of subsidence by first accumulation of Pennsylvanian strata, (2) establish a period of peak subsidence estimated by maximum accumulation rate, (3) correlate estimated peak subsidence with the first appearance of arkose derived from the adjacent denuded Precambrian-cored block, and (4) demarcate synorogenic strata from Permian strata that are postorogenic. Results demonstrate that within New Mexico ARM basins, (1) onset was relatively synchronous, predominantly beginning in early Atokan time; (2) peak subsidence, while potentially younging southward, was relatively coeval in the Middle to Late Pennsylvanian; (3) first occurrence of arkose either predates the period of peak subsidence or is coeval with peak subsidence; and (4) early Permian strata across the study area onlap preexisting faults and folds, and/or form a buttress unconformity with Precambrian basement.
