Record of a pioneering geothermal borehole in London
Abstract The Chalk is a principal aquifer which provides an important resource in SE England. For two centuries, it allowed the establishment of a thriving watercress-growing industry, indirectly through diverted stream flow and directly through the drilling of flowing artesian boreholes. The distribution of artesian boreholes across different catchments, suggests a regional control of vertical groundwater flow within the New Pit and Lewes Chalk units. Interrogation of location-specific information points to the confining role of a few key marls within the New Pit Chalk Formation, which can be traced up-catchment to where they naturally outcrop or have been exposed by quarrying. Evidence is found in geophysical logging of a number of boreholes across catchments, confirming a consistent pattern of the spatial distribution of such key markers. When tectonic stress was applied to the various Chalk formations, the marl bands would have reacted, producing more plastic deformation and less fractures in comparison with rigid rock strata. Such a scenario would have created the conditions for secondary aquifer units, giving the Chalk confining or semi-confining hydraulic characteristics on a regional scale. This conceptual understanding helps explain why the river flow response to reductions in groundwater abstraction varies across the flow duration curve.

Football Quakes as a Tool for Student Engagement
Abstract We present a consistent synthesis of palaeothermal (apatite fission track analysis (AFTA) and vitrinite reflectance) data from UK Southern North Sea wells with the regional pattern of exhumation defined from sonic velocity data. Cenozoic exhumation across most of the region began in the Paleocene between 63 and 59 Ma. Amounts of removed section are around 1 km across the offshore platform, increasing to 2 km or more on the Sole Pit axis. Neogene exhumation within this area began between 22 and 15 Ma, and led to removal of up to 1 km of section. Along the eastern flank of the Sole Pit axis, sonic data define a pre-Chalk event, and AFTA data from these wells show that exhumation began between 120 and 93 Ma. This timing correlates with events defined from AFTA data in the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone, further east, presumably reflecting a response to regional tectonic stresses. East of the Sole Pit axis, AFTA and sonic velocities suggest that Neogene exhumation dominates, while further east towards the central parts of the North Sea Mesozoic sediments appear to be at maximum burial today except for local effects related to salt movement. The multiple episodes of exhumation and burial defined here have important implications for exploration.
Abstract The Namurian and Westphalian sequences from the onshore well Scaftworth-B2, located in the Gainsborough Trough, central England, have been analysed for whole-rock inorganic geochemical data via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and mass spectrometry (MS). The changes within key elements, and elemental ratios, results in a chemostratigraphic zonation scheme consisting of eight chemostratigraphic sequences and 13 chemostratigraphic packages, providing the type zonation for the Bowland Shale and overlying formations. Mineralogical data are provided by whole rock X-ray diffraction (XRD) and are used to calibrate the mineral modelling in order to generate a modelled mineral log for the study well. Furthermore, the modelled mineralogy is then used to calculate a relative brittleness for the samples, which can then be collaborated with traditional rock properties data at a later date. Elemental data can also be used to model the relative abundance of detrital quartz and biogenic silica; while total silicon is detected by ICP, biogenic silica is not detected by XRD owing to its amorphous nature. Enrichment factors calculated from the inorganic elemental data suggest that the sediment was deposited in an unrestricted marine setting, which experienced periods of anoxia.
