Results of a preliminary survey of the water circulation in the Amazon estuary during high river and low river discharge indicate that, due to the river’s large discharge, no salt water wedge enters the Amazon estuary. Rather, an area of turbulent mixing near the river mouth is indicated by a zone of nearly vertical isohalines. As the vertical mixing decreases seaward, vertical stratification develops offshore, persisting seaward across the continental shelf.
