Continental Shelf and Epicontinental Seaways
Abstract Definition and Remarks on Facies The continental shelf is that part of the sea floor between the shoreline and the shelf break, or upper edge of the continental slope. However, an examination of bathymetric charts shows that both the position of the shelf break and the shelf width vary. The shelf break may be as shallow as 18 m (10 fathoms) or as deep as 915 m (500 fathoms), and the shelf width may range from a few kilometers to more than 1,000 km (550 n. mi). On the average, the shelf break occurs at 124 m (67 fathoms), and the width is 75 km (40 n. mi). Morphologic and sedimentary characteristics of the shelf also vary considerably. The shelf surface may be smooth, covered by a variety of bedforms, or may contain banks, islands, and shoals near its offshore edge. Likewise, the sedimentary characteristics change from one area to the next depending on differences in waves, currents, climatic conditions, and proximity to large sources of sediment. For example, muddy shelves may contain nearly homogeneous sediments except for the presence of layers formed during storms. Other shelves consist primarily of tillites dissected by valleys and then partly filled with either fine- or coarse-grained sediments. In many areas, the overall smooth shelf has a sand blanket that has been molded into a variety of small and large bedforms. Ancient shelf deposits form important parts of the stratigraphic record. Sediments were deposited not only on ancient continental shelves, but also on depositional
