Pre-Mesozoic basement rocks offshore Nova Scotia, Canada: New constraints on the accretion history of the Meguma terrane
Geochemistry and regional significance of the Early Cretaceous bimodal basalt-felsic associations on Grand Banks, eastern Canada
Appalachian basement and its intrusion by Cretaceous dykes, offshore southeast Nova Scotia, Canada
Early Cretaceous Carbonate Platforms of the Northeastern North American Margin
Abstract Name: Northeastern North American continental margin carbonate shelf Author: L. F. Jansa Location: From 42° 30' to 46° north latitude and 57° to 68° west longitude, shelf off eastern Canada and northeastern United States Geologic time interval: Tithonian–Aptian Tectonic-sedimentary setting: Outer shelf; tectonically, eustatically, and climatically controlled, localized continuation of Jurassic carbonate megaplatform deposition Basin type: Pericratonic (extensional), developed at the continental margin edge Paleoclimate: Generally humid, subtropical Platform type: Complex; intraplatform variety of environmental settings from shelf lagoon to an open shelf and/or rimmed shelf with steep escarpment in front Platform geometry: Early Cretaceous segment of platform is a series of discontinuous carbonate platforms and banks up to 472 m thick and 50 km wide. It constitutes an integral part of a 1100-km-long carbonate platform belt representing the northern segment of a 6000-km-long or more Mesozoic carbonate megaplatform Facies and fossils: Predominantly mudstone to skeletal wackestone, minor oolitic and skeletal grainstone, rare sponge bioherms; occasionally intercalated shale and terrigenous siltstone; pelagic and benthic foraminifers, molluscs, corals, sponges, and calpionellids Systems tracts: Not established Stacking pattern: Sigmoid; complex, sigmoid oblique; aggradational as well as retrogradational; different patterns synchronously developed at different places on the same platform
